V4sl 1966 80 Hp seahorse:
I believe is running lean. new water pump etc. but seems to be running too hot still. How do you adjust to a richer setting? What are any real signs it is running to lean?

How are you running it, in the water, on a hose, in a barrel?
How are you determining that it is hot?
There should be adjustable needles on the carbs for rich/lean adjustment.

on trailer in lake. i can hold my hand on one side of motor for 5-10 seconds without getting "burnt" other side is a touch and go with holding my hand there b4 getting to hot on my hand.. seems one side is getting hot/hotter than the other. there is something on right side of motor facing rear to front that is part of the auto choke. i cant find it on johson parts catalog ( i assume cause it shows post '68 motors and mine is different?) but seems to be just part of the auto choke.but it says "lean" on it but dunno what it is

Try the link below for the original OMC Parts Catalog for your motor. Make sure you click on the correct model number because there are differences. Good luck!

it is the automatic choke assembly, the cover of it says "lean" and it has a coil spring on the back side of it to adjust the tension on the choke i assume. Is that how to adjust how lean the motor running?

That is to adjust the choke setting, the carbs have needle valves to adjust the lean mixture.
