Re: 1965 restoration

There is one area that is causing concern: the windshield. As in I don't have one. I've played with the idea of building up a hard top from steam bent white oak and 5052-H32 aluminum, but I just don't know. On the other hand I might just make a nice split windshield from Lexan with a red oak frame to match the dash. The hang-up with that is that I don't think any kind of straight line(s) is going to look good. I have been all over the web looking for a used original but they are super scarce. One windshield shop in Florida advertised that they could do it, but needed an original frame to put it in and they still wanted $395.00. If I could just talk my wife into wearing a snorkel mask that would solve the problem.........

I lucked out with my Jupiter and was able to fit a pretty standard used 3 piece windshield on it with no fabrication necessary:

Re: 1965 restoration

Double clicking does nothing, maybe ez can trouble shoot it. Already rebooted (our ITs first suggestion:facepalm:). I suspect operator error. New attachment works good.

That floor has a nice homey feel to it.

I like the look of the 3 piece windshield and it allows easy access to the bow.

That look really nice. I could go for something like it. My problem is that there are not that many boat yards here in the mountains.

Got mine on ebay. Also, lots of salvage yards ship.

A lot of these walk threw windshields can be used on these older boats. The first 3 picks are from a windshield off a Galaxy open bow fiberglass boat.

The second set of pictures are from an open bow Sylvia.

That is super nice! I especially like the flush deck and the original steering setup. I will scour the neighborhood for a used windshield because I really don't want to have to make one. Thanks ez, and N1265, for the tips.

Re: 1965 restoration

My lovely wife found one on Craig's List that looks like it will work! It is about 125 miles away, but we will go check it out this weekend. The seller is going to hold it till we get there.

More progress.

The first picture is the deck finished with two coats of Behr natural cedar preservative. I added a couple of storage trays up front.

This one shows the difference between raw cedar, and one coat of stain.

This funny looking piece:

fits here:

I didn't like the tiny combination lights so I installed a couple of larger ones:

My wife--silly girl--says they are too big.

These are genuine USN sidelights from an oiler that was decommed and used in a SINKEX back in about 1968. I have had them ever since. If anyone wants them they will be on Ebay shortly.

That deck is just awesome. Not so sure on those marker lights :p

I have one of the LED ones and it is very nice. http://www.iboats.com/Attwood-1nm-L...5764940--**********.461414325--view_id.372291

I didn't remember this boat being yellow. I went back through the thread and I think you may have never actually posted a pic before that showed the exterior? I could be wrong. I like yellow.

Thanks for the kind words. I like that Attwood light. I think I'll order one.

I was sure I put up a full picture, but if I did the gremlins ate it.

Re: 1965 restoration

On Saturday I got the Highway Patrol to sign off on the trailer. When I bought the outfit the trailer had neither serial number nor makers mark anywhere on it. I got an NC "X" number, stamped it on, and was deemed good to go. The plate the PO was using--deliberately smudged with paint--expired back in 2004. Today I will go by the tag office and get the news about what it is going to cost me to get it titled and registered.

Hopefully the new seats I ordered from The Boat Seat Store will be here no later than Wednesday. I plan to take her to Fontana on Thursday for the maiden voyage. Here's hoping she doesn't leak.

Oh yes, I bought a set of Starcraft logo decals, correct for the period, from a guy on Ebay for $13.00. They are 3 x 18 with black lettering that looks fantastic against the yellow side. I'll post a pic later.

Re: 1965 restoration

The new Wise seats arrived yesterday. Great service from The Boat Seat Store. I made two sets of U-shaped aluminum brackets that attach to the swivels. The brackets slip over the base and are screwed down front and back. If I need to remove them it takes 1 minute to do it.

Here is the 3 x 18 logo (a Pair) I got on E-bay for $13.00. There are four screws where the original ones were and I did not want to take them out and mess up the paint job. Fortunately these fit perfectly right above them.

I was planning on sea trials tomorrow, but I am still waiting on parts for the fuel solenoid. On top of that I think I may have sheared the impeller key because water floods the mid section and comes out the exhaust relief, and the tell-tale is weak and intermittent. I have a thread going in the engine area about that.
