1965 33HP evinrude no reverse

forward shifts in about 80% of the time, when it does not i can put it in ntl and then back into fwd fine. I have no reverse at all. have checked manual and linkage is correct. I would be greatfull for some input.

Something is loose as a goose. Look at the shift rod connector behind the access plate. It (and both rods) should move up and down as you move the shift handle, with no slack or lost motion. Slack or lost motion=wear & tear at the upper shift linkage below the powerhead. No slack or lost motion = something worn or improperly assembled in the lower unit.
