just bought this monster..got her runnin ..noticed no pee out of pee hole..shut her down..took a piece of wire..ran into pee hole and cleaned out..fired up..no pee still....dropped lower unit..checked impellar...stuck..ordered new one
upon inspecting lower unit i saw that down this open area at the front had mud or sand down inside and was packed in bottom about a inch or two..why?is there sand down there?also on out side of unit i saw a little pin hole ..i dumped water down where sand was and water came out of pin hole?why?is that hole suppose to be there..also i pulled my gear oil bottom plug out and water came out at first..then a mixture of oil and water ..then finally just oil?why?is there water in with the oil?after it was all drained out i poured water back in front area to see if that was breeched but none came out oil hole just pin hole..also i took the two pieces that go on the shift shaft off to grease them and think i put them back on the right way?question is ..is there a certin way they go?..they look like they only go in one way cause the top one is slotted?
i added some photos to see what im talking about...any info would be great and very apreciated..thanks scotty

It is very likely that the seals need replacing. Buy a new lower seal kit for that engine and look on YouTube for videos that show how they are replaced.

Just an FYI, Cloud white is '63 or earlier unless it has been repainted. 1963 Merc 1000's were Phantom Black.. Anyway, common failure is shifter seals, but you might just as well buy the whole kit.. Mercury 26-55682A1 is the right kit according to Oldmercs and that crosses to Sierra 18-2653 and is available right here on Iboats. Mercury/Quicksilver OEM is also available for about 50% more

I've never seen one like that. I have a 1964 650 4cyl and the lower unit I think is the same and does not have the pinhole

Turtles is correct, the "pinhole" is a drain to keep water away from the shift rod. I have two older Mercs and we run in a shallow, mud bottom lake. I drilled the "pinhole" on both of them to a larger size. No, don't remember the drill size:)

cant get the prop off, been soakin it in pb blaster for 3 days..gonna try again..fabricated a make shift puller..hopefully it will do the job..or should i just leave the prop alone and just worry about replacing the shift and main shaft seals and fill her with new lubriplate or merc gear oil and run her once or twice then check again to see if that fixed the water in lower unit problem? no sign of leaking oil around prop just clean water came out before oil when draining out bottom hole..also oil wasnt milky it was clean..any suggestions..or opinions on all or any of that..thanks guys

Get the prop off and replace all seals.

The prop should be remove at least once a year just to clean and re-grease the splines, which is why it is stuck, it hasn't been done.

Corrosion and electrolysis 'welds' the dissimilar metals together and can be a real bear to get apart if not regularly serviced/greased.

Worst case, the prop hub must be heated with a large torch, rosebud or welding tip, until the rubber hub begins to melt.

WARNING when the hub gets to the melting point the prop BLOWS off like a cannon shot, do NOT be in the way. Drape a heavy chain across and around the prop to help contain the flying prop.

Put out the fire as the rubber hub will be flaming. Cut off enough rubber so you can use an air chisel to split the brass inner hub, once split it usually slides off. Wire brush along the splines to clean off all mineral accumulation. Apply a thin coat of clean grease. Reinstall the prop after the prop shop presses in a new hub.

Yep, the pin should be the key.. It's actually an "L" and it stands for long shaft.. All 850's had alternators so they were all "E" Models
