1964 Merc 110 Lower Unit Replacemant

The gear housing on my Merc 110 lower unit broke. I found a Merc 39 the lower unit looks the same but I cant find any information if they are interchangeable. Both outboards are from 1964. Does anyone know if they used the same lower unit?
