i have a seahorse 5.5hp CD-21 but i cant seem to get it to run right at all. ive fitted new coils , new plugs , adjusted the points but it takes ages to get it started and when it starts it idles rough for a bit then cuts out. the fuel pump is working fine and ive got the mixture at 50:1 . ive tried turning the slow idle screw to smooth it out but it just doesent want to run. i think im going to strip the carb to check for any gunk inside but does anyone have any advice as to the problem. thanks.

Are you absolutely sure you're getting good spark? Sometimes when installing new coils I like to cut the wire (if there's plenty of slack) off about 1/2 inch from the end and reinstall it into the coil. That way, you're getting new wire to screw your coil into. If you're getting good spark, it's definitely a blockage in your carb.

If I'm not mistaken, that year has a fixed high speed jet in the carburetor. It's probably dirty or gummed. It is in the very bottom of the carb and must be absolutely shiney clean!!

Ah... the CD-21... the last of it's kind forever...

Oh yeah, clean the carb :)

BTW, have you done a compression check? What is it?

Re: 1964 johnson seahorse 5.5 troubles

I've got a CD19 (1962) that had been sitting idle. I went thru the carbs ect and it ran great in the test tank for a while and all of a sudden the idle went rich. After some investigateing I pulled the fuel pump off and the vacume port was wet so it was pulling gas into the crankcase thru a bad diaphram. Something to check if all else fails.
