FIRST ATTEMT AT A RESTORATION
I am about to embark on a resto-MOD project for a 1963 MFG runabout. We will be replacing the engine, an old Johnson with a newer 70 HP engine with hydraulic steering. I know that the recommendations for the transom are for 45 HP. Will it be ok with a 70HP motor? What do I need to confirm about the motor size before I add it?

Welcome to iboats

Gee, a 60 yr old Fiberglass Transom, and you want to over power it by about 50%. What could Possibly go Wrong? The old engine was likely Clamped on, the 70 will need to be Bolted on, so holes will need to be drilled. I wonder what condition the Wood will be in after 60 yrs?

This your boat?

It's never recommended to overpower above rated max, rest-mod or not. Esp 150% overpower

I wouldn’t go over 50 hp max . And that’s with a beefed up transom .
My 64 Edinboro is 5 hp over rated . But the transom is way overbuilt .
