Hi, I am new to this forum.

I just aquired an old Merc (best I can tell it is a 1963 Merc 500EL (50hp)).

What I know:

- I put a heli coil in (stripped plug).
- I cut the shift cables off (all rusted out).
- I put oil in each plug hole (turned it manually many times - very easy to do)
- It shifts manually easy forward & reverse.
- Installed a battery & it turns over nice.

Does not seem to create spark.

Took a plug out and held it close to the motor and do not see any 'arc' spark.

I really believe that the motor is good but do not have a clue to where to go next.

I have read a lot on the net, forums and could use a few more pointers or Links.

Any old timers out there? Other than me?

Thank you in advance for any input you may have.

Do a compression check to see what you've got.
That motor uses a magneto that is driven by a belt from the flywheel, check that it's not broken.
The magneto is bolted with 4 bolts to an adapter, check for a ground strap from block to magneto.
There is a terminal nut on the side, this is to ground the magneto for stopping, remove all wires on it and check for spark again.
If still no spark you should undo distributor cap, move it out of the way then undo the 4 bolts holding the mag on. You'll have to carefully pull the rotor up and off its shaft.
Undo the bolts holding the large cover and remove; you'll see the points and coil, I'd replace the points and condenser (try your local dealer) or http://store.eastcoastmarineservice.com/
the point gap is .010".

I will print this off and try to get to it this week.
Thank you for your insight.
