Re: 1963 Leavens Mariner Transom Replacement

Thanks,
I am going to use Arauco Plywood for the new transom, should be about the best alternative to Marine grade i would think?
Is there a certain brand/type of recommended fiberglass to use on a boat. Im definitely no expert, im quite novice when it comes to fiberglass, and i know there are lots of ways to buy fiberglass. I also find it alot harder to find these items stocked in Canadian stores. Lowes has the Plywood, not sure where i can get the fiberglass yet and Epoxy yet.

Re: 1963 Leavens Mariner Transom Replacement

Ok guys thanks again. I got the transom plywood out, and thankfully the floor and stringers are still good and don't appear to be or or rotted. I know how to build the new transom, but fiberglass in is confusing me. Do I want to use fiberglass mat to apply to both sides of the ply, and then use fiberglass cloth to adhere to the inside of the hull? Taping and filitting with biaxial cloth. I'm pretty sure this is correct, just need confirmation. More pics will be up within the next day or 2 as well. I will keep reading other threads for their technics as well
Thanks

Mat on the ply . Most here stick the new transom in with thickened resin /pb with a notched trowel . 1/2" I think ..
Check out Woodonglass's link at the bottom of his post . Pretty much all you will need to know there . Making some of the clamps would very helpful . :)

Well I thought my floor was good but I thought he'll I've come this far why not be 100% so I ripped up a section of the floor and wow. What floor?? The fiberglass was the only thing supporting any passengers. Brutal, so I tore it all up and noticed the stringers are all FG which is normal BUT there's no wood in them! Either it's rotted to compost or the boat was made that way? I'll be posting pics tomorrow

The stringers were toast it looks like. Lucky for you, there were only 3 of them and they aren't very tall.

WOG has a good design for some clamps for installing the new transom. In your case, I'd use his clamps with a modification of what I used on mine. In the image below, you can see where I drilled a hold through an overflow and 2 deck drain holes and used 1/2" all thread rod. You'll only have be able to use one through the drain hole. test fit the transom before drilling a hole through the drain. Make sure that the hole is smaller than the drain. I'd suspect that a 1/2" hole would suffice.

Putting the 2x4's on edge inside and out will put the transom back to a flat condition. Mine was bowed about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. And pipe clamps work wonders too.

When you get the PB mixture in there and clamp it tight, It'll ooze out and into any voids between the glass and the wood. It's a fantastic feeling when you do release all of the clamps and can feel a nice straight and very solid transom.

Ok so my transom is built, and my next thing is the plywood floor. Should I do both sides with mat or cloth? Also how many layers do you recommend on each side. I think cloth is the choice around here.
Opinions please

Damn it I slipped up with my grinder and I put a slice in my hull about 2" long and 1/8" wide. What a bozo move as this job was going so smooth. Any advice on fixing. Can I just fill it with PB or do I have to glass it. Do I fix it from the inside or outside or both?

NOW you're officially an iBoater!!!!!:D:D:D Fairly simple fix. Put some duct tape over it on the outside, fill it with PB on the inside. Let it cure overnight, Then grind it down all around about 3-4 inches on the inside and lay 1 layer of CSM, 1 layer of 1708 then 2 more layers of CSM. DONE!!!

Probably some activity on both sides. Throw up some pictures. I do know that this is common and easy to fix generally.

EDIT: Never-mind; Wood has got you covered far better and a minute sooner.

Lol wood, I guess a first time restoration just wouldn't be as fun if everything went perfect. Damn I was mad, Couldn't believe I ran so deep. Thanks guys. Tomorrow I glass the transom in and maybe the floor. Pics will certainly follow

try fumed silica, same stuff, different name

or

colloidal silica

it escapes me at the moment, but I think there's an alternate that starts w/ an A too

Re: 1963 Leavens Mariner Transom Replacement

Update:
so im skipping a bit ahead here, Stringers are glassed in, just waiting to find Fumed Silica/order it so i can fix my grinding hole lol. Then i can glass in the floor. But obviously i have to glass in the Transom first.
The pictures are just a dry fit prior to me glassing the under/upper side of the floor. the transom is now glassed BUT im finding now that it is glassed when i went to do a dry fit and dry fit the back portion of the cap on, now my transom is too thick and doesnt fit quite right.
Do you suggest sanding it down a bit, its literally maybe 1/8" thick/tall so i think sanding a thin layer shouldnt be a problem.

On a good note, we had a storm lastnight and it blew a part of my tarp off, which caused rain to get in my boat and on the new floor. Good news is it just beaded and didnt actually absorb into the new plywood, Everything seems good! Phew. so i dried it all off with towels and re-tarped it better.

Any advice about the thick transom due to glassing would be appreciated.
thanks

You'll want to butter the transom ply w/ PB when you reinstall the cap over it.

I'd grind it down slightly smaller then you need to. That'll let you get a good bond between ply transom, PB & the cap.
