new guy looking for help. Can I safely run this engine without the unicharger ? I would like to bypass it altogether. Anyone wanna try and get this old dog to hunt? I'm limited in my knowledge about electrical work. I have owned and maintained a 1964 Naden with a 35 h.p. Johnny, and a 1984 Skeeter with a 150 v6 Johnson motor that had sat for 5 yrs. Before her resurrection. With Easter round the corner it would be nice if this Crestliner could be rebornWP_000409.jpgWP_000408.jpgWP_000401.jpgWP_000395.jpg

You can run it, but the battery will go dead if you run it long enough. Then you will be sitting wherever you are at the time. Why on earth do you want to do away with the chargng system anyway?

I'm pretty sure you can. 75 percent sure anyway.
It has an automotive style distributor ignition which requires a battery to be connected.
It also has to have a battery for the shift coils to work.
Recommend you have a big deep-cycle battery to do this.

Probably to costly to repair. But, it all depends on what is wrong with it.

Welcome to the iboats.com forum! The members here are great and can help you solve any problem. It appears from your picture the motor's model number is 50926 which is a 1961 and it has the standard mechanical shift gearcase. Good luck!

Not sure why it won't start. The voltage regulator looks worn. I took it out and am trying to get it checked out to determine if it works or not. The replacement part CDI wants 213.00 is a little steep. Called Delco Remy and the part is discontinued. Maybe I can get it rebuilt at a local shop. I live in Plano, TX. The battery is charged and the lights on the dash work, ammeter and the on button lights up, but when you turn the key to start it won't fire up. When you bypass the electric box, the motor will start

I had the identical ignition/charging system on my 1962 Johnson 75HP and found a NIB Delco voltage regulator on eBay for $90.00. Be careful when connecting the battery cables to the battery or you might blow the rectifier diodes if polarity is reversed. Good luck!
