That ceramic filter can be cleaned !-----Do not spend any money on parts untill you determine the condition of all the parts in the lower unit.-----Money can be saved by just buying the parts needed.---Points can be cleaned / refurbished.------You do not always need the complete kit.

Speaking of the fuel filter: this motor has the glass bowl with some sort of cylindrical filter (a hard material almost like pumice). I haven't found anything similar online. Can the filter be cleaned or is there a replacement that someone knows of? Or, are they now replaced with some other system now?

Replacement is a "plastic-type" filter. Part number 308239. Make sure to replace the bowl gasket also - part number 302675.

I too have a website dedicated to vintage omc parts that you could not buy here on iboats. But they will be able to help with most of it.

I have removed the lower unit and drained the oil, but was having some difficulty removing a few of the screw, so I was thinking about not opening it. Tell me what you think. The oil from the lower unit reminded me of the look of chocolate milk: not clear, not overly thick or thin, brown in color. I rubbed the oil between my fingers and it was slippery with no grittiness. I looked at the bottom of the container and found no metal fragments or shavings. There is no sparkle in the oil indicating metal filings. The spindle at the lower end of the drive shaft is in very good condition: no rounded edges, no chips. The drive shaft turns smoothly in the gear box.

Would these things be a pretty good indication that the internal workings of the lower unit are probably in good shape? Should I continue to work on getting those sticky screw out, or fill it with oil and hope for the best?

looks like some water came in but not much..... but you cannot tell how long the infiltration lasted since you have no history,

by screws if you mean you are splitting open the LU.... I would not for now. just refill with quality oil and take care of the " uppper" issues to get his engine going

changing the oil in the LU is cheap and will keep you going.

after you change the oil and it remixes with any left over chocollate milk...... replace it again after a few outings and start your evaluation of how bad things are.

For now you may be able to get away with changing the oil once per season. Do check for fishing line around the shaft

of course a LU reseale is the ultimate necessity but for now tackle the more important issues like getting it to purr and roar :joyous:

Invest in a simple impact screwdriver.----Been using one for over 40 years of repair work.---Removes stubborn screws in a jiffy.----No need to be afraid of taking these lower units apart.---All simple stuff and you will learn all about your motor and the next one you pick up./

Aaaaaaaaarg!

I got the impact driver and entered the gear box. To my great pleasure, everything looked in great shape. Now, to order gaskets and seals (bushings) to keep the water out when I put her back together again. I watched a couple of youtube videos on pulling the shift bar o-ring and the bushings on the drive shaft and propeller shaft. The first one worked great. The drive shaft bushing was more challenging but eventually worked. Finally, the drive shaft bushing was to be pulled. If was very difficult and after trying a couple of ways to get it to budge, I over stressed the housing :eek::cold: ...... and it cracked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been searching the net far and wide, and everyone is sold out of this obsolete part. I am currently querying the salvage sites. I have a friend with a machine shop who does aluminum work, would a weld with careful grinding work to repair? I am so disappointed, especially because I have ordered all my parts already. I'm sure there is a fix, but would love any input I can get.

Thanks as always. This was such a rookie move.

So, I was able to pull the shift rod bushing by tapping it and then pulling with a bolt as demonstrated on YouTube and that went very well. The drive shaft bushing was the sinker of my ship. Good news though: I contacted Dan Gano (as directed by another member here) and he had a new one ... and at a great price. I am awaiting its arrival with a happy heart. I will post a photo of the one I cracked when I get the chance.

Thanks for all of your great input out there. I am currently awaiting parts. Have the next two weeks off of work, so hope to have this baby purring soon!
