I recently received a 1962 evinrude 18 h.p. it was previously hooked up to steering and throttle controls that were on his boat but the boat its going on does not. the engine has throttle/steering arm on it that i will be using. it has an electric starter and pull starter. the previous owner said it runs but im having trouble keeping it started. it turns over and begins to start with choke on it runs few seconds but wont stay running. it has brand new fuel tank and hose. where do i begin to solve this. also the electric starter is not hooked up and i want to hook it up if possible to save my shoulder and arm but the boat its going in doesnt have controls is there a way to do this.

Yes on both, running problems 1 check your compression and post #'s, for both cylinders should be around 100 psi, 2. check that your spark is snappy bright blue arc on both plugs using a good quality spark tester. 3 look at all fuel lines for leaks (air leaks) and fuel leaks, 4 remove carb clean with a good carb cleaner then blow all passages with approx 20 psi air, adjust for initial settings.. next issue starter mount starter as engineered then mount solenoid just aft of where the starter mounts, use a standard push button switch for the start button google how to connect a starter solenoid (schematic) and you will see many examples that apply, now find a good location to mount the start button and find a good marine crancking batter. good luck!........

Re: 1962 evinrude 18 h.p.

those old 18's are great motors

+1. I'm lloking at one on c-list today! Must resist! Resistance if futile! Must resist! Resistance is futile! ........Best of all, now that you can fix one of these old vintage OMC motors, you can fix 'em all. Beware, it's an addiction :)
