Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks Arch! Yeh- It definitely is a good feeling. But the problem with this point in the project is there is not one or two big projects, it's a thousand little ones that require back and forth to the store a hundred times!

Triton- you beat me to my posting- you peaked at photobucket! I got done at 2 am last night so there was no way I was posting then- it had to wait till today.

Last night I got done with the second coat of white on the bow- that was good enough so I pulled the tape- exterior paint is DONE!

The old sandpaper tape paper stuff

A little bit of and upgrade I think

I also installed the steering cable for the second and hopefully final time.
I ran the wiring to the switch behind the steering wheel for the bilge pump.
I installed the unicharger the same place it was before.

Before

After

I also ran the wires for the throttle cable as well. I will be spraying the box and arms with the charcoal metallic to freshen it up again.

Of course all the stuff I put in last night will need to be disassembled and taken out when I paint but I want to make sure everything is in it's place before I paint.

I think tonight I'm going to install the fire extinguisher and call it quits- I'm beat today!!!

I saw andgots speckled paint job and it has me thinking of doing the same on the walls on the inside of the boat because it is the rough textured fiberglass on there and it probably won't look to great with bright white paint on it. I'm thinking the white base paint, and then the ocean blue and charcoal metallic speckles. We'll see when I get there.

Thanks TI. Yeh I'm hoping to have everything ready to go by the end of the month! Got the motor to get rewired and painted, the windshield to finish, the floor to paint, the seats to order and install, etc...

We are done with school on Monday so the perk of being a teacher is I get to work on it during the day then too:)

Hey Mick,
As I expected, it looks great. All those little things will drive you up the wall if you lump them together. Just work on them the same way as the big ones, one at a time.
Great job.
Take care

Yeah, the white stripe is a really nice addition- Makes it look GREAT. I'd go for the speckle finish on the hull, too- It'll look nice- and really won't add too much work considering the overall scope of the project... What's an hour or two more??

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks Bob and Arch. I had to get away from sanding the windshield for a bit so I started on the other stuff. Once I get everything wrapped up inside the boat, which I am pretty much there now, I will finish the frame and purchase the lexan.

Andrew- Yeh, i think I'm going to go with the faux finish on the sides of the hull. I'm thinking to use the ocean blue, and the charcoal metallic to do it. i always wondered why the factory paint job had the red splashes everywhere- now I know why:D

Last night I took out the bow eye bolt and reinstalled it using 4200. Iactually got my my to come out and help for 20 minutes holding it in place for me:eek: Then I waxed the white stripe and then hooked up the bow light and installed it. Then I installed the gas insert and the fire extinguisher up under the dash. Everything is drilled and in the inside of the boat now so I can remove everything and get ready to sand everything in prep for paint.

Here are the pics from last night.

Since all the electrical work is done now what type of battery do you guys recommend???

I'd like to hook it up to see if I get any blown fuses:p

A marine starting battery or a marine dual purpose battery.

Hey Mick,

Man, she's lookin' perty!! Have you considered a thin black pinstripe around the stripe? Your color choice is amazing, and I thought it would really make it "pop". Regardless, she's beautiful!! Oh... and as a father of a 22 and 11 year old... big thanks for the important work you teachers do!! Our future Presidents, doctors, lawyers, etc, all go through you! Thanks again.

Looks like you are getting there pretty quick Mick! Some people like the gel batteries, but I have heard the older motors are hard on them. I usually just stick with a good conventional marine battery.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks Norn- much appreciated!

Well, about the battery. I guess I should add that I have the unichager which will put out 20 amps. The battery connects to the unicharger and all my accessories(lights, horn, fishfinder, bilge pump, and radio) connect to the fuse block which connects to the unicharger.

My motor is a 1961 75hp- I don't know if that matters?

The only other thing that I plan to hook directly to the battery terminals is a 45-55lbs thrust trolling motor that will be used sparingly.

Hope that narrows it down to make a decision on what battery to choose(I've been looking today- I had no clue there are so many different kinds of batteries!!! I need help!)

My rubrail insert is in! I will probably run over to pick that up this afternoon.

personally i think a pin strip the same color as the rubrail would look superb auto parts stores have thousands of different colors i am sure you could get reallly close.

Mick,
The pin strip would be a nice touch too.
I plan to just go with a conventional marine battery.
Nice work.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Ok, I guess I have a prolem. I bought a battery when I picked up the rubrail so I can test everything. I hooked my wires- black and white directly to the battery. I had to stop right away cause everytime I tried to put the positive on the horn started blowing??? No clue there cause there are two wires on the horn which are both black. I have one going to the positive and one to the negative on the fuse block. it's a push button to get the horn to honk, so no clue why that's not working. So I pulled the fuse so I could proceed.

Next I tried the lights- they were good and working and then the 15amp fuse blew on them??? No clue why that blew???

Then I flipped the switch for the bilge pump. It workedfor a couple seconds and then that 5 amp fuse blew??? No clue why???

The radio works continuously and the kill switch I have for that works as well.

The fish finder works as well.

I used no lower than 16 gauge wire(mostly 14), and I never used smaller gauge to larger gauges. It is always the same- 14-14, 16-16, etc...

So what's the deal? What are your thoughts?

As for the pinstripe. I want to keep it as close to original as possible. The pics of the stripe in the original manual there is no pinstripe.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Is hooking it up directly to the battery giving to much juice? If it were hooked to the unicharger power going to the fuse block would be max 20 amps max. That shouldn't matter though hooking it directly to the battery though should it?

There's a pic in photobucket how I have it hooked to the battery. The positive is unhooked in it.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Mick can you draw us a digram of how you wired up the items in question? Sounds like they are overheating for some reason, if they were grounding out the fuses should blow right away. The horn switch is a momentary one right? Have any idea how many amps the bilge and lights are pulling? If you don't know the amps, just tell us how many watts they are pulling.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Mick you should be able to run everything to the battery without any issues. Sounds like you have some ground or circuiting issues (or both). You may have a series vs parallel wiring problem. AC and DC are circuited a little differently.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks arch. I just done installing the rubrail and I am calling it quits for tonight- 12:30:(

I will draw up a diagram tomorrow and get all the amps/watts. I had intentions of drawing everything up for future reference- I guess mows a good time for that:)

the lights and bilge did blow right away. The horn is a push button- push it and it's supposed to honk.

I have a 15 amp fuse for the bow and stern light combined. a
I have a 5 amp fuse for the bilgepump.

I'll do the diagram tomorrow. Thanks
