Re: 1961 Boston Whaler project

Thanks for all of the input guys! At this point I just need to get started so it will stop being what I'm going to do and be what I'm doing, then I don't think I'll be so intimidated. I'm sure I'll have at least one more question before I'm cruisin' down the river.

Around my area, a 13' Boston Whaler, in good condition or nicely restored would cost about $5K . . .

Wow, nice to know... Although I don't see it ever going anywhere. My fianc?'s dad passed it down from his dad.

Zool is 100% correct. The 1st order of business should be a good warm bath with Tri Sodium Phosphate TSP. Get it at Lowe's and follow the directions. The 120 grit won't do much. JBC is spot on about using 40 grit. That gelcoat is toast and will need to come all the way off down to fresh glass. This will take a lot of grinding and sanding so I'd highly recommend you get one of these...

and a full cover tyvek suit. You WILL be itching a lot but dusting yourself down with baby powder prior to suiting up will help fill your pores and help keep the itch down.

Neat old motor too. Looks to be a '59ish 10 or 18 hp, if I'm not mistaken.

My guess is 1961 (silver "T" on top instead of the round "hot plate") and 18hp w/ electric start (I see the cable, which is a hard to find item!)

I think you're right silver. My old '61 10hp had the same silver T-stripe, rather than the silver disc of the '59s, now that I think of it. Must have been bought new with the '61 Whaler. In that case, these links should help the OP. Have fun grinding, and grinding, and grinding :/ (times likes these, I'm glad I have a tinny)
