1960 75hp Johnson how warm do they run?

Bought this about a year and a half ago off of Ebay. I let is sit for awhile and this winter took the lu off and resealed it and put in a new impeller. Had to pull the dist and file the points to get good spark. Today got all the hoses on the motor replaced and the lu back on so I put it in a barrel and fired it up. I am sure I have the timing off. It wants to kick back when it is starting. Runs smooth, but I cannot get it to idle down and it seems to be running way too warm. The running warm maybe the thermostat as it seems to come and go running warm. One minute I could hold my hands on both heads and the other not. Seems the starboard side runs warmer. Could be the timing though as I know wrong timing will make them run warm. I am getting a good heavy mist out of the exhaust hole though so I am sure the new impeller is working. Let me know what you think.

Freddy, Why not time it properly? Points should just open as timing marks on dist pulley and pulley base line up. Second set of pulley base timeing marks are 90 degrees clockwise.

Set the throttle such that the pully base timing mark aligns with notch in black distributor bracket. At this point carb throtlr roller should just touch roller follower. Adkust set screw on throttle arm to make the adjustment.

I had Ken ( a guy who has owned one of these since new) talk me through all the adjustments. Found out my manual was wrong on the dist marks. Got all the adjustments done and tried to fire it up. No start just back fire. Ken helped me again with the plug wires. Seems the covers on mine had been switched so I had all the plug wires wrong. After hooking them up right it fired right up and idled good, but it still seems too warm to me. I am not sure how warm the heads should feel to the touch. I am used to the small twins or single cylinders where you can hold your hand on the heads. These heads get too warm to do that. When first started there is a mist of water out the exhaust and after the thermostat opens a fairly good spray so I am sure we are pumping water good. How hot do these run?

should run around 140-150.

That's the temp of a HOT cup of coffee. Get some thermomelt sticks if you're wondering. Don't burn your hand.

You can stick your hand in 150 degree water, but you won't hold it there very long.

Just wondering...Wont these engines burn less fuel if they run hotter? Where can a thermostat be found and what temp ranges are available?

didnt you say you are running it in a barrel? back it in the lake to test your temp. typicaally, these engines run hot in barrels or trash cans. the exhaust comes up by water inlets in barrle and causes ventilation of water pump. it should run any where between 140 and 180. depending on water temp and use.

Get it tuned right and it will run a little cooler. Also like stated the barrell water will heat up a little also. Fix the timing and see what you got.
