It has just been frigid here for the past couple weeks. -22 on the truck thermometer the other morning going through a creek bottom.

Here is the progression of my attempt to save the original emblems. The emblems were in fair shape. The many coats of paint that had been slathered over them was what protected them, but also was what made a heck of a job out of saving them. I first tried a small area with paint stripper. The stripper started to immediately melt the emblem. So I decided to try my hand with my dremel and carefully grind away the layers.

It was tough to tell how deep it was going and the plastic was very brittle.:facepalm: I tried to buff them smooth before painting 1st coat with rustoleum aluminum. I brushed on the red acrylic enamel. Not the best, but I am glad they survived.

Detail work is always rewarding. I have a set of those same plastic emblems, they show their age and now have a place on my garage wall.

Finished up work on the original Attwood steering wheel. It was cracked pretty badly so I used JB Weld to fill the cracks as best I could. Because of the grip pattern it was nearly impossible to wrestle the JB Weld down into them.

I gave it a quick shot of Ford Oxford white. I'm thinking of hitting the top and bottom of the wheel (not the grip area and spokes) with the same red as I used on the StarCraft emblems. The 1960 Lark II also has a small swoosh of red on each side.

My other thought is to use the Carribean turquoise instead of the red. The wheel appeared to have been Blue originally. Not sure why as no blue on original boat. Any comments or votes would be appreciated- I can take it:lol:

Lookin' great! I love the bow anchor gizmo too. Hopefully it won't bounce around much while underway. I like the idea of Caribbean turquoise for color. It seems more "aquatic". Plus, red has a hard time holding up in the sun and tends to fade fast, which is why you don't see it used on boats very often whereas the turquoise/pastels tend to age nicely.

Nice job on the steering wheel it looks a lot like mine. Way cool windlass anchor rode thing. I've never seen one like that.

Thanks KF, I agree with what you said about red being hard to keep looking nice. Last night I did find a pic in the 1958 Starcraft brochure section here on iboats that shows my boat with the red steering wheel. I might try red first and can always scuff and paint over with turquoise.

Thanks 59- I looked at your posts again for inspiration regarding the old controls that I will attempt to resurrect! what kind of paint did you use on your control handles? Really looks sharp!

Thanks ss, I am but a humble servant to my obsession. Aircraft (or made for aluminum) stripper gets rid of any paint. Rustoleum self-etching primer and gloss white or colors for the look you want. Then a light coat of clear over everything. I found for the best results in the small areas, I got this visor with lights and magnification for 10 bucks on ebay shipped from china. That and an artists selection of small, and I mean tiny brushes. I waited 48 hours between coats. And when the can gets to about 3/4 empty, they usually start "spitting". Watch out for that, it can ruin a nice final coat.

Another day in the "Winter from Hell" here in Missouri! First shot is of the oak gunnels stained and one coat of Spar Urethane. Had to wait several weeks for the 16 ft clear oak to arrive. A few days ago a buddy helped me trim it down to the right width on my table saw then sanded edge smooth.

The other shots are of the Mahogany dash that had a LOT of blue paint. Took a lot of paint stripper. I was hoping that there was some varnish left on the wood before it was painted, but no luck. The blue really sucked into the wood. Just have to belt sand the rest of the residue away.:joyous:

Wowza! The Oak looks great and the mahogany looks great too. I'm sure it will clean up nicely. She'll be the classiest boat on the water for sure. Better hurry, Spring will be here before you know it.......hopefully.

Oak looks good, and the dash appears to be almost done, just the last little bit of blue to get out of the grain. Nice work.

Not North Florida here Kfa. Worked late in shop last night with the wind, sleet and snow really howling. Its about 500 feet from my house to my old shop so it takes determination to get over there and worse yet, back::cold:

I have been dreading replacing these gunwales ever since I found this boat. Actually almost didn't buy it because of them. So far so good. Established the width at the dash and slowly worked toward back and then toward front with 8x1" stainless screws, staggering them top and bottom, inside and out every 5.5 inches or so.

The original steel screws were very random and could not figure out any real pattern. They were not big sticklers for detail in 1959.
