Just picked up an old aluminum 14 1/2 foot Lone Star boat with a 1958 Evinrude Lark 35 HP 35514-20334. Plan on doing some fishing here in Idaho with my 3 boys.

Would like to get this outboard ready for fishing and trolling. Previous owner said it was running a couple of years ago but has been sitting with gas in it for awhile. So far I have ordered a carb kit, tune up kit, and impeller. Would appreciate info on the following:

1. What kind of gas tank does this model use - hard to find double-line presure tank, or single line standard Wal-Mart outboard tank?
2. What is the recommended gas/oil ratio for this engine?
3. What octane rating is best, and is ethanol mix OK?
4. What spark plugs and gap are recommended for higher altitude (4,500 ft - 7,000 ft) and used for slow trolling?
5. Any other suggestions or info

Thanks!

Dan

it requires a dual line pressure tank, unless you convert it to a fuel pump.($100 which can be the cost of a fuel tank, watch ebay).

fuel oil ratio is 24:1 87octane : TC-W3 outboard motor oil, Walmart Super Tech brand is fine. change all fuel lines to Alcohol resistant lines, that will take care of ethanol.

Spark plug CHAMPION J6C gapped .030, trolling open to .035 or as much as .040. points gapped a .020. high elevation you will have to experiment

the TOP SECRET FILE, at the first of the forum has lots of help for you. read all of it.

1. Early 1958 needs a 2 line pressure tank. Later 1958 they switched to a fuel pump, and that one runs on a standard single line tank. You can tell by the fuel connector; if it has a fuel it pump sets on the starboard side of the engine.
2. 24:1 Gas to oil
3. Regular gas is fine.
4. Motor calls for Champion J6C - but if you're doing a lot of trolling J4C might be better. Recommended gap is .030" but for trolling, up to .035" is ok.
5. Great old motor if it has been well-cared for. Yes, check compression before putting a bunch of money into it. Should be 100psi+ with no more than 10 percent variation between cylinders. Better yet, 120-130psi.

i realize you are new, but this is just what happens when you do multiple post, you get info in 2 places. this wastes your and our time. i have merged your 2 post together.

This is what model numbers are for. 35514 is a 1958 Evinrude Lark 35. The Larks have a fuel pump and run a regular non-pressurized fuel tank (yes, Wal-Mart).

The 1958 Big Twin and Big Twin Electric use pressure tanks. Not a concern with this question.

I appreciate all of the responses! I will look into how to do a compression test. The carb kit, tune up kit, and impeller arrive Monday. The tune up kit has condenser and contact set. I'm pleased to learn that a standard single line fuel tank will work with this model. Sorry about the double post. My boys have been sitting in the boat parked in our driveway daydreaming about fishing and asking me when we're going.

they obviously are good boys. get them involved in the work, it is a great learn for them, and makes them feel part of the project.

yo umm it might be suggested that u replace the coils too if they dont come in the tune up kit. make sure u get two of everything coils points condesors cause its one for each cylinder and to replace spark plug wires. maybe the boots and the spring also.

since u got all the big things on the way. its also good to change the gear oil. very easy job just a bit messy. two screws top and bottom on gear case. there both FLAT head. use new washers to seal screws then done. u buy some 85-95 weight gear oil and put it form bottom up by the way. when u take out the escrews notice the color of the old egar oil. white milky means water. and thick and black measn just old.

tip try not to get on hands or clothes cause it will stink them up really bad and may have to wash them 2-3 times before it comes off. and washing hands the smeel mayb stay on there for maybe up to 3 -4 days.

check the prop for any fishing line take it off by the way to check. then use a new cotter pin.

when ur all ready just adjust ur needles and maybe do a quick decarb
