1958 10hp Evinrude Questions

OK I just replaced the points and coils on this motor. I have put everything back the way I am hoping they go back together. I torqued the flywheel to the proper specification and gapped the points to .020 as stamped on the flywheel.

My questions are.

1. When I try and pull the rope to start the motor it feels as if it is binding. It kinda feels like when the fly wheel turns it binds, releases, binds, releases (make sense?) What could I go back and check for this? Also I pulled the spark plugs and this released the binding problem I had. So with my limited knowledge of motors I am thinking this is a compression thing?

2. What is a good starting point for the two mixture knobs?

Your coils may be rubbing on the flywheel. That is not good. They have to be as close to the flywheel as possible without actually touching it. Make sure that the coil magnet does not extend past the mounting block at the base of the armature. They cannot overhang at all or they will hit the inside of the flywheel. It is binding right, not just the compression slowing it down? That is good.

This thread should help.

Your low speed should start at 1.5 turns out, high speed 3/4 out. From there refer to a thread in the FAQs by Joe Reeves regarding fine tuning them.

Thanks I just updated my post. I removed the sprk plugs and this released what every the binding was (compression?). How do I fix this?

It is supposed to be hard to turn over the compression strokes. It won't run without compression.

sounds like normal compression strokes- just make sure the coils are inboard of the bosses they are bolted to, so the flywheel magnets dont hit them, hope u put in new coil wires !

yeah I put new coil wires in also. SO after I removesd the spark plugs and reconnected them that made it easier to pull for some reason. Now I can't seem to get it to get a spark. I pulled the plugs again and checked for spark and they were good.

The coils have to be mounted properly flush with the mounting bosses - too far out and they will bind/rub and too far in and they won't fire properly.
