1956 Johnson water pump repair

I have a 1956 7.5 H.P. Johnson engine.
Is it necessary to pull the power head (to disconnect the shift rod) to gain access to the water pump?
I've had conflicting info on this problem.

You definately need to pull the powerhead.

The good news is that it is not as hard as you may think. You will need to replace the base gasket upon reinstallation. Let us know if you need help with this.
