1956 15HP evinrude water pump

I am replacing the impeller on a 1956 15m HP 15016 evinrude, and there is an O ring on the drive shaft above the impeller hosuing. Any idea where it goes or what it does? Thanks, Rick

Hi Rick,
The only o-ring in that assembly goes at the TOP of the driveshaft in the machined groove...
