I couldn't see the photos on my work computer, but now that I can - Wow, that 1958 Fleetwin is nice. If you are considering the 18 hp then don't pass up the 1953-56 15 hp motors either.

It's really to bad that the 9.5 isn't that good of a motor. I found alot of real nice ones. I don't want to risk the chance of not liking it down the road.

Honestly, I like the 9.5. The only real problem is the discontinued parts. And, yes it's a little harder to work on. But, it's a small outboard, and as hard as it gets it's still not all that tough. There's only a couple discontinued parts, but they're prone to failure. If you can get one with an accompanying parts motor all the better.

I kinda like the look of the fat 9.5 too. What are these hard to find parts. Can you still get head gaskets,lu seals, coils, condenser, points, water pump and a carb kit? I did some reading and the people that have them said good things about them.

The hard stuff to find is the shift shaft seal, and the rubber motor mounts. I haven't had any problems finding anything else.

I'd take the 1957 10 hp and drive up to get it if you can. That way you save having it smashed during shipping and you get to pick the seller's brain. I bet he has lots of knowledge he's buying to share.

No, that's a 1953 Johnson QD-14 10 hp. Don't buy one like it. The carb is obsolete and a pain to work on.

Here is a 1957 10 hp.

That fellow is offering you a fine deal on that '57 10hp! My advise is to take him up on his offer. If he already knows you are 16 yrs. old and going to a technical school then most likely he's going to take care of you and not sell you a piece of junk---he'd have to be really rotten not to. That '57 10 hp looks identical to the red and white 18 hp for $1000 that you liked, just a wee bit smaller on top. I think it looks better for that reason. It's also just as tough, having a lower unit that I'm pretty sure is interchangeable with the 18hp of the same year. How's that for tough? If it doesn't come with a tank, you can change it over to a fuel pump for about $40 and it's an easy job. You can find out how here. I'll bet the guy will cut you some slack and throw in a tank. Everything on that motor is EASY to work on, it all "makes sense" down to the carb and lower unit and ignition. Parts are still reasonable, too. If I was 16 again, it would be just what I was looking for.
That being said, I guess I'll allow you to buy whatever you want to just this once.;)
Just my opinion,
JBJ

Ya I asked for some pics so if it looks good i'll grab it. I could take my dads 18ft bow rider with a 150hp johnson out that will do 70mph but I have more fun with my freinds on a small boat.:D Also the guy is from a marina so I don't think he would scam me.

Wow. You guys are fast. That original 7.5 is a beauty. That 9.5 is ugly!

A '57 '10 for $150 in good running condition is not a bad deal at all. A good engine and parts are abundant.

It's still a good idea to see the engine before you buy it and at the very least check the compression if you can. That's the basic check for any new engine.

Re: 1950's 7.5hp vs 1960's 9.5hp

Just wanted to let you guys now if you need any parts for a 1960 3hp light twinn I'm parting one out. It makes me sad to see it go. It was my dads when he was a kid and it has really low hours on it. But it was left to sit for a really long time and the pistons rusted to the cylinder walls really bad. Every bolt is rusted in and snaps so I decided to part it out but lots of really good parts. Like the rods, crank, weedless lu and lots of other parts. Some of the parts are on ebay tell me if you need any thing.

It's amazing the pistons rusted so bad as the insides are in good condition. Were the spark plugs left out? There's definitely usable parts in it.

If you want to keep it going as it was your dad's I'd just look for a new power head. As I assume the LU is in good condition based on the good looking insides.

Ya I was surrprised at how nice The inside was because the tops of the pistons are bad. I would love to fix it but I wouldn't use it much because it's so small and I allready put some parts on ebay and they have bids on them. Also I would need to drill and tap like 50 bolts. It would be a pita. I just glad it's going to people that have a use for it and not the dump.:D

Yep, it 'looks' in good shape. The inside is clean. And the skeg is busted off a tad but you can get a new one later on if you need it.

It has $375 listed on it, why are they selling it for $150?

I'd still personally want to do a compression check on it.

I would like to do a compression test but I belive him that it's compression is good.
