Picked up a 1949 Mercury super 5 today. I'm new to outboards and would like to restore this motor. Motor seems solid has good compression. No spark. I've looked thru endless forums and websites for info on the parts I need to get this sweet little outboard up and running. Anyone on here have any up to date info on where I can order new ignition parts. Also which parts I should replace first. Thanks.

As a 1949, it is likely your motor has a Bendix Scintilla magneto. Original coils are likely cracked. The Bendix mags can be tricky, but when set up correctly, they work well. Be prepared for sticker shock as replacement coils are pricey - $65-$85 apiece, depending on the source. There's a guy on the AOMCI site's Webvertise who offers them for about the cheapest around. Goes by OldOutboardJim. Old Mercs has them, too, as well as a manual, paint, water pump impeller, carb bits, etc. Nice motors - good power in a tiny package.
