The most reliable motor won't cooperate if it's not properly maintained and winterized.
Yeah for sure, this year in cold March I got my SS out for walleye and the normally reliable Merc wasn't fired up at home first. The cylinders were full of fogging oil and she coughed and sputtered for some time before coming to life.

What is proper way to christen a boat at the boat launch? I have named the boat after someone, and they are going to be the one to smash the bottle.. The only thing is, do I really need to smash a bottle of champagne? Or even pour it over the bow? It's only champagne but seems like park police or other people could get offended and cause a stir, since I don't have a private slip

Wow, good question! Sorry if I sound like Captain Karen but I think that the glass smashing thing around the docks should be avoided. Westmarine advisor has an article on it...and it looks like they make a bottle for the ceremony that breaks easily & the glass is captured in fine mesh.

Yeah, my consideration was using the West marine bottle, I wouldn't even consider leaving broken glass at a public boat launch. I just don't know how many nanny's/ Karen's there are out there that would have an issue with even that.

Time to bring this boat into modern times, with a brand new Suzuki DF25A. The boat is de rigged now, with only the old 40hp hanging until I can get a mount to hang it up. It's fully de rigged at this point

Wondering if I can delete the green plywood spacer on the back? It's not big enough for the new motor mounting. I could make an enlarged one, but I'm fairly sure that they only existed for motors that did not bolt in place ( RD-28 only clamps in place ). I know I have seen many of these Holiday 14 OB's with an identical plywood panel, so I know it's original or it has at least been re produced.

After some research I'm Pretty sure it's required.. I scoured the internet and Iboats, and the majority have some sort of plate visable, including boats that were restored.

The one thing I did notice, is the motor is not dead center

The wooden motor pad is not needed and causes issues like corrosion as well as it will rot over time. I covered the area on my SS with an AL plate to cover non standard BIA mounting holes and some minor pitting. You may have the same issue with non standard mounting holes for your new motor.

I'm pretty sure that the only holes are for the motor pad, which I can use to mount whatever to the transom, as the Big Twin 40 only clamped on. There were no mounting provisions, and I'm fairly sure this was the original motor

After removing the motor pad, I did notice that in the case of the Holiday 14's construction it makes perfect sense on why it's there.. The pad uses the same bolt holes as the bottom edge of the transom and the 4 bolts into the knee brace.. The pad helps deflect all the forces into the knee brace

After a few hours, It was time to test run. No choke, no fast idle. Just turn the key. Still need to hang the control cables up under the gunnel and then install the tach but it's about done

Looks good on the back (y) I was wondering if you were going to reuse the cable pully steering or go to single cable helm in the tilt tube.

cable for now. I drove the pin out of the OMC quick release so it would come out of the motor adapter, and it fit right together.. But I do have a good used Teleflex helm I could put in later if I want

Where should the annode tab be pointing? Right out of the box, the rear edge i pointing to starboard. I think that's right based on prop rotation and torque, but I don't know if it's ballpark adjusted in the box or just slapped on because you adjust it based on the boat. I've never rigged a motor before. I don't even know how badly the tab effects steering

I center my tab anode, with power tilt and trim the prop torque pull goes away when you get up on plane and adjust the trim out.

Well, the motor is perfect, silent at all rpms. It doesn't have the low end of the 40hp, but it does 25mph. Takes a little more to get it on plane, but it cruises at 15ish mph. I didn't bother with the trim much since I kind of forgot it was there

I do have to figure out my prop. I'm not getting quite 5,500 RPM without any trim, and it should be at 6,000 RPM. I didn't do extensive testing, just brought it up on plane, waited a few seconds, checked speed and then backed down to cruise, in accordance with break in procedures.. I suspect that the 10.25x11 that it came with has a little too much pitch, but I don't know exactly what I should buy... I will go stainless however
