Re: $1800 nightmare

I am perfectly fine with restoring the boat it gives me a sense of pride knowing that I rebuilt this item and it will last as long or longer than the original and its good bonding time with whoever is my aid friends ride in the boat, real friends help bail the water out

Perfectly sound reasoning.

Re: $1800 nightmare

I feel your pain. First boat I bought for 600$ put 2000 into it and used it twice. Sold it for 500. It was a 12' jet star with a 40hp.
Next boat a 19' caravelle that I rebuilt all the inside, stringers floor etc, pd 2400 put in another 3000 sold to my dad for 3000.
Next boat I bought 21' tempest, surveyed in immaculate shape. First 10 mins of driving blew the 350 mag engine. Couldn't afford to rebuild last year so I waited until this spring, got the mechanic to pull the engine and my motor mounts are rotten and more then likely stringers are as well so I'm scrapping this one. It's a crapshoot but I love boating so much all my bad luck and inexperience has taught me many lessons and I will not give up on getting out on the water.
Do what you can afford just get out on the water any way that you can.

Next time, don't buy an 80's Bayliner/Maxum.

The bummer is those 80's BL/Maxum's had a nice style about them but even the original owners didn't maintain them. They were the ultimate entry level boat for everyman. I can only imagine the 2nd through 6th owner's. At this point, a full restoration, taking into account the opportunity cost of your time, you will be throwing good money after bad. As much as I love that era of Bayliner, I like boating more than grinding and life is short and summer shorter. I think the bummer really is you just don't buy that boat without a bit more knowledge as it is like spitting into the wind. We would have loved to have helped you ahead of time instead of pick up the pieces afterward.

I had an 80's Bayliner that I bought nearly new. I took very good care of it and the boat was in so cal in a very dry climate. I still coud see issues developing becuase of the poor quality. I would never reccomend one to anyone.

They were great for the money that's for sure. They had all the looks and speed of a more expensive boat.

The saying "Beauty is only skin deep" applies well to these boats.

Doesn't matter what boat you have, plywood and water and moisture does not mix. I have sheets of three quarter inch cheap plywood sitting in my back shed for 20 years and it looks better than whats in my boat. If it's not fully glassed air tight it will rot on the water.

i dont know if it will help much but i figured it couldnt hurt. when i re done the floor in my spectrum this spring i coated the treated ply with 2 coats of exterior acrylic paint on all sides and edges. and coated the entire upward surface in waterproof outdoor adheasive when i applied carpet. hoping it will last a while. i keep it covered while not on water. orig floor un coated lasted 24 so hoping i get close anyway. be all ill need.

Hope that was marine grade or reg.ply treated by yourself.
Treated ply can react with your aluminum and cause corrosion(pitting/holes)over time.

With all this attention your getting, please keep us posted on whats going on with your project. seems like you were gonna take the boat to a mechanic friend. what happened? what di you find? I also got myself a 1986 Glasstream 17.5ft bass boat with a 1986 135hp mercury v6 for $1400. Only to find out that the motor was shot and will need a complete overhaul. But i did know that there was something wrong with the motor, only didnt know that it was that bad. but for me it is always fun to start a project and start working on it. So i started taking apart the motor, stripped it down, bought pistons, gaskets, impeller kit, most bearings and took the block to get bored, now while waiting for the block to get ready i am fixing all the details on the boat. the boat has a real nice hull and gel coat is still beautiful, So far it has been aloota fun working on it. and im sure i will have a great solid motor once i get the $1000 of parts in there. Only buy used boats if you enjoy projects and then do them right. And you will get alot of enjoyment out of it and end up with a great boat and the pride that you built a great boat with your own hands. enjoy and please keep us posted on your progress.
