Hey guys I am close to pulling the trigger on a 96 four winns horizon 170 with a 115 evinrude 115 looper. What kind of speed can I expect from this setup. Anyone running similiar boat. Anything to add about boat or motor would be appreciated. I will be getting compression check and sale will be contingent on test drive.

Re: 17 ft Fish/Ski with 115

When I was looking, I was able to test drive a Tahoe Q4 (19') with a Merc 115 and it topped out at 42 gps. I'd think that 17' would do a bit better, but I don't know what the weight difference is. For comparison, my 20.5' Procraft with a 200 Optimax will hit mid 60's when all the conditions are perfect - but that's a totally different hull configuration (think bass boat hull). Good luck with the check out and post back with results.

That hull and motor is a great combination.

I'm a huge fan of the Four Winns OB boats. I've spent a lot of time researching the different models and the features offered over the years. 1996 was a transition year. The catalogs and stuff from 96 show the older hull design, however, there are some boats with the newer hull design (that was officially introduced in 97) that got the 1996 year designation.

It was a pretty big step up for the newer hull design. So, what hull generation is the boat you are looking at?

I'm not quite sure what YD is implying with this. However, I'm a bit offended. Should I be?

That Evinrude is a good motor, as you mentioned compression check is a great idea.

I'd imagine you could see 40+mph easily with that setup, if the carbs are good and she's running strong:D

Good luck to ya!

Do you have pictures of the boat? The appearance of the 1996 and older boats is quite a bit different than the 1997 and newer boats.

Also, they changed the model designation. 1996 and before they called the boats by there basic length...17 ft = 170 Horizon. In 1997 they called the replacement for the 17 ft model the Horizon QX.

The 1997 boat is a complete keel up redesign. It was a little more compact in fact the length overall was 16ft 6in versus 17ft 6in. Although the beam went from 7ft 0in up to 7ft 6in.

Basic dimensions aside the 1997 boat had a little curvier design and even though it is shorter the interior space isn't that much different since they made better use of the space, espeically in the rear seat/transom area. Also, one of the nicest improvements in 1997 was that they went to a full fiberglass cockpit liner as standard. Snap in carpet was also offered.

On the Four Winns website the have all the old catalogs for previous years.

1996: http://assets3.fourwinnsmarketing.com/past_product/catalogs//1996/16 Outboards (p14).PDF page 1

1997: http://assets3.fourwinnsmarketing.com/past_product/catalogs//1997/16 Horizon Outboards (p14).PDF page 1
http://assets3.fourwinnsmarketing.com/past_product/catalogs//1997/17 ... Specs (p15).PDF page 2

As you will note the 115 HP motor is the mid range motor for the 17ft boats. From what I have seen it is also the most common motor.

The 115 motor should get that boat into the mid 40s for a top speed. Hole shot should be pretty good, plenty good for skiing and tubing and the like.

Either way Four Winns makes a nice boat. The outboard models they made are, in my opinion, some of the best.

I didnt mean to offend you Racer :) .

4Winns are actually one of the better boats in that caliber. .. IMHO..

I talked to our motor tech yesterday and the only other suggestion would be to check the lower gear fluid for water.

YD.

Again..sorry if I sounded a bit strong..

Well I put a down payment on the boat, this is all contigent on the test run. Compression was 120psi for all four cylinders, and the lower unit was pressure tested. The only thing I was wrong on was it is not the loop model it is the 90 deegree v4. Hopefully she performs well haven't heard anything negative on the motor. All in all I really liked it, now I just have to wait till the ice melts.

Cool.

Did you confirm that it is the 1996 and earlier hull design?

Do you have any pictures?

Good luck with everything.
