Just wondering if You Starcraft guys think this is a good deal for '76 SS? The boat needs a prop and battery. The new pedestal seats need to be installed and the trailer needs to be rewired. Here's the ad...

16' aluminum open bow with 80 hp mercury - $1500
Date: 2010-03-06, 8:20PM PST

Just in time for springers! 1976 16' aluminum open bow star craft with 1978 80 hp mercury outboard. Engine runs excellent and the boat has a new floor, new pedistall seats that just need to be installed, and heavy duty trailer with new rollers. The first $1500 takes her away.

I'd pay 1000 if the motor passes a compression test. Pedestal seats are easy to install, wonder if there's a hidden issue preventing their installation. I'd check out that he installed the floor properly.. did he seal everything? Use at least stainless screws to hold it down?

What do you expect for 1000 0r 1500 A dealer here in Mt vernon has a 18 ft S/S in excellent condition # 7500.00. FIRM Sounds like the price the guy wants is very reassonable. Have you priced even a 80 hp running Motor?

If that is all that needs to be done to it I'd say that is a heck of a deal! I would suspect that it needs much more though. Have Fun!!

I'd say $1000 tops. Trailer looks like a POS.

Depends on your area. I have been monitoring Cl for almost 6-7 month now for SS and cannot find anything....... anything........ for any price. So I am ready to go as high as 2500. But I have doubts that in my area anyone will be willing to sell it even for 2500.

Check across the line in the US there are some great buys down there right now. I wish I had of done this, as I would have saved myself a couple of grand. My brother found a real nice 18 foot SS with all the bells and whistles for $2600. and he is going to drive 2000 k one way to get it.

I paid $1000 for my 16' SS w/ 80hp Merc and I'm pretty happy with the deal. Mine did come with a CMC trim/tilt bracket as well...so I'd want to pay about 750-800 for that one:)

Well, this is my last resort. I was not able to find something similar closer to the border. He is my reasoning 2000k one way at 16 liters of gas per 100 km equals 320 bucks just in gas one way, round trip is 640. Then you have wear and tear on the truck at 16 cents a km (average lease rate), another 640. So the total for the boat is going to be at least 2600+640+640=4000. Is it worth it? At this point I cannot justify it.

I'm showing Newmarket, Ontario is only 408km from Detroit?

There is an absolute plethora of Starcrafts here in Michigan(economy not so good) so I'd check out this area:)

This link is a thread for good deals on starcrafts from craigslist.

El Toro. --- Remember that the eastern area guys live where they almost give away there Starcraft boats. Failed economy and no jobs. Here on the west coast as well as western Canada thats not necessarly the case. If the price you find for a boat in good condition looks ok and it CHECKS out then buy it if it fits your needs. Also is the 1500 Canadian funds or is the boat in the US? Another big difference in $$. Check the hull, the floor, the transom and the motor for compression and general condition. Any boat in the western states of Aluninum construction will be Much higher than you will find on the east coast. Also check the Oregon area on craigslist they list a few boats there as well. Good luck on your search.

Right now our dollar is very close to par with the US which makes a huge difference. On and older boat all you are going to pay is GST and PST if it applies. In my brothers case he is going to take a weeks holiday and make it a holiday for him and his wife, sure it will cost him some gas and a couple of nights in a hotel, but it is together time and he is planning on visitng some relatives on the way home.

Re: 16' SS ad on CL - is this a fair price?

Thanks for the replys guys! I just wasn't sure about the price because I always read on here about guys picking up Starcrafts for $300 bucks or something crazy like that. But it might be an East/West thing like Pugetsound says and also there seems to be less Starcrafts in B.C. in general. (for sale anyway) Maybe I'll go check it out, the only problem is it's about 4 hours away. But still... I don't know, there's just something about those Starcrafts...

Re: 16' SS ad on CL - is this a fair price?

It's probably not worth checking out if it's 4 hours away. The boat is a bit of a wreck and the hull and trailer aren't valuable at all. Maybe 300-500 dollars. It depends on how well the motor actually runs. Most of the time, people who say something runs excellent on craigslist turn out to be a disappointment. In my experience, they tell you it runs great etc, then you get there and it won't start, wont go into gear, sounds like it threw a piston and they tell you it just needs new spark plugs or a new starter. Considering the outboard is almost 40 years old, I'd be willing to wager it has problems. It's not hard to find a motor that old for cheap. Look http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/boa/1632921768.html

HMMMMMMMM thought you said you could find a good motor cheap. The one you listed has a bunch of problems and is not cheap besides its a old Merc. LOL Seriously there are some good boats out there and one does not know unless they look at them. I drove 500 miles to by my Starceaft in Idaho with only a picture and told it was ok. It was and the best $ 4000 I ever spent on a big boat.

El Toro Can you get another photo or two of the interior of the Boat and a better shot of the outside. I do not see a wreck of a boat at all . But mabey another view might be in order. If your willing to go look at it I would think the owner would oblige.

Re: 16' SS ad on CL - is this a fair price?

Hey Pugetsound, the boat is about an hour and a half north of Portland. Another stumbling block with the deal is that he doesn't have title for the trailer which I would need to bring it back across the border. Although I may get a trailer from a guy here for cheap and bring it with me. The starcraft guy says he'll knock $200 off to sell without the trailer, doesn't sound like quite enough to me though.

Sounds like it might just be over the State line. Some where near the Columbia river. Try the Photo request first. Then good luck. Go with your gut feeling uaually works out well that way. I you want to send me the sellers phone number I could call as another interested paarty and ask a few more compelling questions. Then get back to you. I have bought a lot of boats and sold a bunch the last ten years. Ed
