150hp...high speed misses

I have a friend....(heard that before?), who has a 93' 150hp Force and he had it out last weekend and although it ran well he said it suffered from some high speed misses and power loss. Overall he could use the boat but the misses and surges were enough for him to shut it down for the weekend.:(
He has owned this motor/boat since new and has kept it in good repair so it has a good mechanical history overall.
Any takers on what this might be? (ignition? fuel?). Maybe an ignition coil? or a CD module? Are there good checks in the manual for him to follow around troubleshooting this kind of thing?
It sounds a bit more ignition than fuel to me...but I'd like some opinions on where a good start point and maybe some easy tests that I could impart to him?
Any takers guys?
Thanks again.:)

Re: 150hp...high speed misses

Dirty carburetor
Lean carburetor adjustment
Restriction in fuel system
Low fuel pump pressure
coil breaking down
Coil shorting through insulation

These are some things that may cause a high speed miss or surging.
