I HAVE A 91 MARINER 150 MAG II, SER. OC237685, THE MAGNETS ALL COME LOOSE AND IM TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT FLYWHEEL FROM THE SALVAGE YARDS. FIRST ONE THEY SENT WAS A 92 MODEL. IT WAS WRONG TOTALLY. MUSTA BEEN EFI. SO I SENT MINE BACK WITH IT AND THEY SENT ME ONE THAT WILL BOLT ON OK, BUT THE TIMING MARKS ARE TWICE AS LONG AS THE ONES ON MINE AND YOU CAN NOT TIME IT . I GUESS YOU WOULD CALL IT A WIDE BAND AND A SHORT BAND OF TIMING MARKS. ANYWAY HOW DO I GET THE RIGHT PART # OR THE RIGHT FLYWHEEL. IM STARTING TO GET DT'S FROM NOT BEING ON THE WATER . CAN SOMEONE HELP ?

Re: 150 mariner mag II

First off, quit yelling. It isn't polite. (Figure out how to type in upper-lower case)

There's only a couple of types of flywheels that could go on there, and they are obviously different. It would help if we knew what electrical system is on it. It came with a troublesome wet-back 40 amp. Some were converted to 16 amp, or dual 40 amp.

If the timing marks don't line up, it's not off a 2.0 - 2.5l V6. Any flywheel off a Small block V6 will have a mark on it labeled .462. If it doesn't, or the number is different, it's off a different engine.

Pictures, of the original flywheel, and of the regulator or rectifier would help.

Re: 150 mariner mag II

went out and put my old flywheel back on went to tdc then went to 462, put the other flywheel on and only had to move pointer probly eighth " to put back on 462. so i went to tdc again and then back to the 462 and its right on the money. but when i try to set the timing the marks get kinda wacky and then its stars to move to zero. when i first turn the light on it, its showing around 8 to 10 degrees btdc. when the magnet come loos it broke the trigger arm and i put a new back on it and also a new ball joint on the trigger. its set right on 11/16.

Are you trying to time it running? Have you disconnected the "advance" or "idle stabilizer" module(s). Is the linkage set up right?

Do you have the factory manual, or are you winging it?

Re: 150 mariner mag II

i have the manual put out by joan & clarence coles. And im trying to time it with the plugs out except for #1. i have taken the advance module off of it and was going to set timing at 23 by just turning the engine over. i have water going to water pump also. I have went all through the link and sink part of it. im stuck here for some reason. I beleive that flywheel should work. I think!!! also i have grounded the plug wires as according to the manual.

I did not change the timing when I took off the idle stablelizer. Perhaps you will get more performance if you advance the timing, but isn't that running the motor more on the edge of destruction?

Timing should be about 23? at full advance. If there's an advance module, you set it at 19? and the module does the other 4. Then when you get going real good, it retards 6? to 17?. That's why we rip them off and chit can them.

Also, if they should happen to short out, it'll instantly advance the timing to about 35? at WOT, and the power head will respond by instantly grenading.

Setting timing while cranking is right. As long as you won't let it start, you don't really need water to it.

Create an account at photobucket, and upload the pictures there. Edit the pictures first to limit the width to 600 pixels so they don't splat all over the page. Photobucket will supply a direct link, which you click on and it goes into your scratchpad. Then click on the insert image icon here (in advanced) and paste the link you saved at photobucket. You can put several images in one post.

Re: 150 mariner mag II

i took a tape and measured the marks on both flywheels and thay are the same distance from 0 to 462 and from 0 to 23. the marks on my old one are in 0ne increments and the new in is in two. the new one just looks bigger but they measure the same. also lined the splines up with both flywheels and everything is the same. I'm wondering if the stator could be messed up in some way?

I ohm the stator with a digital wavetek meter and between the two yellow wires i have 00.3 ohms and infinity from yellow to ground. it also has one large regulator between the coils. if that helps. tried to read #'s on stator but one of the screw holes is in the way. 398 610a9 is what i could make out.

Re: 150 mariner mag II

Are you having battery charging or tachometer problems? You have a 40 amp single regulator system.

It would help if you figure out the durned picture thing with photobucket. Get a high school kid to help you.
