How tough is it to change a water pump on a 2000 150 hp ocean pro ??? never messed with a outboard motor. I do have a manual for the motor.

Since you have the manual, it is not hard. Read the procedure. Drop the gearcase. Read the procedure again, while looking at the gearcase. Then begin the repair. You will need some Permetex Aviation gasket cement, some silicone caulk and some marine grease. The key that spins the impeller locks(actually jams) into position.

what I am worried about is getting the shifter rod in right, is there a trick to make it a little easier to connect it??

If that motor is like my 1998 J150EXECD (likely), there is a clevis pin under the carb, in the shift linkage. Shift motor to forward and pull that pin and slide the linkage toward the powerhead to release the shift rod.

Shift rod height is 26 1/4 for a 25" shaft, but you should not mess with it if it is shifting properly.
