Hello everyone, I have a question that is probably going to be considered dumb but I can not figure it out so here goes. I recently purchased a 140 hp big bore looper engine I generally know they are from 1988 to 1994 but this is my problem the tag on the transom bracket is gone, I only have the numbers on the aluminum plug on the engine to go by and I am unable to decode them using introduces. The numbers are 20AHRJAS then below that is G1521408 Can anyone help me decode these numbers and at least give me a year please? Thank you, Robert

Re: 140hp Johnson Looper

The # 20AHRJA shows up in the shopevinrude.com year finder as a 1988 2.0L Sea Drive. The S at the end would indicate a design change or modification during the model year. Sea Drives were outboards with an integral mounting bracket designed to be used on full height transom boats, instead of an I/O or straight inboard. Same idea as today's boats with bracket mounted outboards but the Sea Drive engine bolted directly to the boat with no need for a transom notch or splashwell (or seperate bracket). Is this the type of rig you have? Or if yours is a "regular" outboard, maybe the powerhead was swapped from a Sea Drive engine.

Hello, Thank you for the reply I never considered it could have been a sea drive in a previous life but now its a standard 20 inch transom mount outboard. It has a factory 140 hp cowl on it but obviously it was converted from a sea drive. Any idea on the horsepower of the 2.0l sea drives. Thank you, Robert

Either 120 or 140 depending on the carbs.
