That was absolutely not what I was expecting when I opened the thread. Once opened, had to be seen through to the finish. I know lots of people that are great at what they do, almost none of them can tell you how to do it so you can understand it. I am absolutely blown away. Fantastic job! Hope you and the better half enjoy it for many more years. Best of luck, sincerely, Dan.

14' Welded Aluminum Skiff: Welding

14' Welded Aluminum Skiff: Welding

Rickairmedic, BobsGlasstream, danm2a2,
thanks for the very generous remarks, my wife does enjoy her skiff, and I enjoy being carted around in the summer evenings and 'otter watching'. I was very impressed with the Honda 8's noise level, or lack of noise since you can sit 10' apart talking and hear the other person clearly, and I'm about half deaf.

Rickairmedic, I used both MIG and TIG, long seams and fillets where I could control the MIG. I used a Lincoln 350 Power MIG for weld power and a Python push pull torch burning 0.035" (dia.) 5356 alloy welding wire which was too hot and would have been better to have used smaller wire.

I use TIG for most corners, ending one long seam tying to another and for tanks, pipe joints and other detail welding. I'm welding with Miller Dynasty 300 DX power supply and all the alloy filler was 5356.

Bob, next is a remodel that I did of a set net skiff. I converted this skiff into an open, stand up console, offshore fishing boat for our daugther when she graduated college a few years ago.

Here is the boat AFTER the rebuild with the Skipper just powering out of turn on a freshwater lake during the builder's launch. [I freely admit that the 90 Honda is too much for the 900 lb. hull but it was what the dealer had on hand.]

Cheers,
Kevin Morin

Kevin,
It looks great too. It looks like it will fly.
You were also correct earlier when you stated that we never have enough tools. I'm always looking for a reason to buy a new tool, (big or small).:p
Have fun and keep up the great work.

F'n amazing is all I can say.

Your calling is to be a custom boat builder. You could be the Jesse James of the boating world.
