photo290472.jpg Should oil have come out like this? Or could it have been where I had it laying down a few weeks until I built a stand for it? It's a'73 E-rude.

Last of the old rot coming out and starting to fit new wood in. Once that is done I can start planning bright work. photo290542.jpgphoto290543.jpg

Screens will just plug up, the best way to do a drain and know that it will drain is an actual drain. Iboats drains in the link below, you'll have to scroll through the searches as there's some that are not what you need.

In my cabin of the Chief I have a regular 1" splashwell drain tube in the aft end of the deck. Nothing will plug it up and you can see if it's covered up.

Couldn't figure out what was what, then I got it.
I was talking about two different things in a thread.
1. The limber holes (yes, water). I was noting the fact that I'd left a small gap at the bottom of each bulkhead (raised deck forward, full-width bench at SW), for water to drain back to the bilge area.
2. I was making a vent using hole saws (there is a pic of that), and talking about putting screen wire or something on the back side to keep critters out.

The vents you provided the link to would definitely work, but I want it to be a one-of-a-kind, kind of thing (and I'm cheap), and have the materials on hand to make something.

Thats just a weep hole above the gear case. Generally black oil on a two stroke is just exhaust build up in the cavity. I get a black water the drains out the weep hole on my motor. Shouldn’t be an issue other than the motor runs a rich mixture.

Thanks, I know NOTHING about OB's so it was worrying me.
The day I bought it, the mechanic ran it in a barrel and I was shocked by the smoke. Called my old ob mechanic and he laughed, said he'd be more concerned if he didn't see the exhaust in an older 2 stroke.

photo290611.jpg My Sprayit kit arrived last night. Looking forward to life after rattle cans.
Looks like a couple days of much needed rain, heading out on a scavenger hunt for assorted bolts, screws and hardware needs as well as a couple more hole saws to finish the vents. On a side note, the Sprayit system can be used on two other hobbies I mess about with, old trucks and guitar refinishing.

I hope your rain passes quickly so that you can get to use that new spray gun. :)

Looks like we entered our rainy season about a month early here. Rain in the forecast for at least a week. Putting a damper on painting for me.

That wep hole is above the gear case fluid, it's for sure 2 stroke oil.

Yeah that holes along the side, it's a good idea, I like that. Not sure it's "one of a kind" tho

My SS I have them as a pass through for my fishing rods with a holder for the butts.

Well, one of a kind for me!
I like the reversed-rod storage idea.

The weather finally dried out enough to uncover the boat and get a little more work done in the bow area.
I'm finally at the point that I can make a good list of my electrical needs. I'll have a battery forward for a bow mount TM and one in the rear under-bench storage area. The raised deck forward turned out to have much more storage capacity than I had envisioned.
My raised deck forward will serve as a platform to fly fish from, so I am considering a belly bar of some type to give me a little more stability. Kind of depends on the boats stability when complete I guess.

Ya know, all you have to do is speak a targeted splash date and the whole weather world goes nuts! Haven't been able to touch anything since about forever (well, I just looked at the last posts' date, might not be forever but it sure feels like it).
May have to splash with just the basics in place.

Looks like my poly tarp is at the end of it's effective life. I'm thinking I might replace it with a nice fitted boat cover of some sort. The frugal (read cheap) side of me wonders if homemade might be an option. Anyone tried that with a modicum of success?

I got one of the Attwood semi-custom covers in 300 for my Chief, I really like it so far. You have to make a support from PVC pipe or similar though to keep the water from pooling or it will ruin the cover.

The 600 cover I got for my SS sits folded up since it's in the garage all the time when not in use. You could get away with a 150 cover if you had a car port but out in the sun and wind it will go pretty quick.

I'm thinking that as soon as I finish this up in a few weeks I'll start building a carport for the boat and my truck. Even at that, I want the cover to last as long as possible as I suspect this may be my last boat and I need to make sure I do everything I can to make everthing last. I'll check out the Attwoods.
I was in Wallie-world and saw some kind of support for boat covers, it sat on the deck in the middle and extended upward with a mushroom-shaped cap you could adjust to give you some 'slope' for drainage. I have a couple of old weber grill ash catchers (bowl shaped) that I could make something similar to what I saw in the store. That might go well with the pvc pipe configuration you mention.
Thanks for the ideas.

First time the tarps been off in a while, beautiful weather here after an extended heat wave, but next week calling for hot again.
Hatches in place now and starting to locate the two seats. The pedestal shown on left was from a donor, it is 13" high. But, I'm thinking I might go with telescoping (12-18").
