I recently acquired a '64 aluminum hull Richline. It's in good condition and the transom has been rebuilt in a semi-proffessional manor. It does not have the original Manf. plate anywhere on it which leads me to my question. What size of motor can I put on this thing?
I have a 10hp that runs great, but only pushes it about 5mph, with a tail wind. It has a thin plywood floor, trolling motor, and battery but that's pretty much it, well not including my 200lbs. While I know it will never be a speed boat, I would like it to plane out, or at least come close. I have a 25hp but am not sure if it will sink it, kind of scared to try it without some input.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Re: 14 1/2 Richline

A picture of the boat would help. Is this a stripped out rowboat style boat with just a couple bench seats? or something with a floor, furniture, livewells, etc.? I would think you'd be able to do quite a bit better than 5MPH with a 10 horse on a typical 14' tinny. My uncle has what I would consider a fairly heavy 14' tinny and we just upgraded from my 4HP to a nice newer 9.9 Merc and it really moves out now.

Re: 14 1/2 Richline

are you running a long shaft motor on a short shaft transom. pictures of boat and motor.

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format.

Re: 14 1/2 Richline

I have a 14 foot richline also, and I used to have a 9.5 horse on it, and it would barely plane with 1 person and no extra weight in it. I have upgraded to an 18hp, and it now gets up on plane barely with about 2 people. I am looking to find a used 25 hp for it now. It handles the 18 just fine so far. For some reason this boat just seems heavy and does not want to plane well, so I know what the problem is. I think with a 25 horse it should get up and go pretty quick. I could only do about 13 mph with the 18 and two people in the boat, but I built a deck on the front and added a trolling motor, battery, and floors, so it is a bit heavier.

I will try to get some Pics to help but for now.... It has a factory 3 bench seat configuration. I placed two pedestal seats in it, for my backs sake, a thin wooden floor(1/4" plywood), a couple of anchors, and a 35lb thrust till steer trolling motor with battery. I use a 10hp Sport Twin and it gets me where I need to go however; I do mostly river fishing which makes a difference. The rivers I'm in don't have much of a current, a steady fast walk at the worst.

My biggest concern is what might happen if the motor is way too big, meaning the 25hp. Since I don't have any capacity/spec. plate I don't know how much over, if at all, the 25hp will put me.

Your 10 HP motor is not running on both cylinders, is in serious need of a tune-up or there is something else wrong with the boat or motor. I had a 14 footer with a 10 HP (green) Johnson and it was all the power I needed as it jumped on plane and ran well.

this is a 14 1/2 Lone Star, same vintage. i ran a 1955 15 hp rude on it. i have to put weight in the bow to get on plane, so i put remote controls and stick steering at the middle seat. it ran great with this set up.

I have a 14' Richline v-bottom and it handles 15 to 20hp just fine. My 25hp Johnson seems to make it a little rear heavy. If your boat is like mine I would say 20hp is the most you should go. I have no problems planing out with two people (@400lbs) and fishing gear, coolers ect.
