It's a father son real life project! More important than your boats! Whatever it takes! Goofaball! He'll have that hopefully for years and years.

It's okay because KC doesn't seem like the type of guy to take himself too seriously:D

My son was out working on his transom. I stepped in to make a couple of sawzall cuts on the inner transom skin since it was sooo thick. He pretty much got it all by himself with a little help.

I need to decide what size transom we're going to build (height). A 12 year old can legally operate a boat under 10hp by themselves and my parents have a place on a 9.9hp limit lake. I have a Yamaha high thrust 9.9 already so things are kind of pointing in that direction. A 9.9 powered inshore center console :encouragement:

Oh I know he didn't mean anything I just thought it to be funny. As far as motor sounds like a 9.9 fits the bill Your son is doing a great job

jc55 I find this a very interesting thread on a very interesting hull and for a good intention.
My feeling is monetary cost isn't as important as the quality time and learning experience you son is gaining. What the finished project turns out to look like is no where near the life lessons and bonding you two will share.
When my son was that age he had no desire to approach this type of activity, it was all about ball sports. I also missed this type of leadership from my dad when I was 13 because I lost him to an auto accident. I to this day missed out on his guidance, leadership and knowledge.

Don't kinda care how it turns out but I'll be watching just to see how you 2 do. I think this is exciting! Dad you're in the spotlight and good for you.

Thank you bonz_d for opening yourself up and putting your story out there. It means a lot to me personally and it'll be great to have you tag along. For our family, none of these hobbies really define us or consume me as much as they are a training tool. We live in an area that has a lot of poverty and fatherless children. I think it makes us try harder.

In 2011 we lost Mom to Lou Gehrig's disease after a 6 year struggle that took a huge toll on us. It's been a rough road, but The Lord has been good to us in spite of it all. I made a promise to raise these kids to appreciate all of the little things in life and have compassion on others. I also want Matt to be exposed to everything that I know by the time he's 18. He's actually helped me behind the scenes of the other boats, has all of his own tools, his own 1950's Wildcat tractor that he works on with Grandpa, and he's building electrical circuits from my own hand drawn schematics, lol. I'm a musician too so all the kids play something and have performed.

I got remarried last year, so it's been a tough transition for the little guy with a house full of girls. We men have a need to challenge ourselves and conquer those challenges, so he really comes alive when he starts to see the fruits of his labor. It's been kind of a positive escape.

Teamster, that's the parts motor for my Sport Craft. It's a 2000 four stroke 25hp Bigfoot with a spun rod bearing. I bought it for spare parts. The motor behind the little boat is the old DT200

Ahmincha, oh I know you didn't mean anything by it...thanks for the compliment.

KMV was a Norwegian design that was built up here in Canada. They made some interesting little centre consoles:

Might be able to get some ideas from that design.

That's a great project for the young mans first boat!

The exterior lines and the innards (stringers) look a lot like an MFG design.

Looking forward to seeing some more progress on this boat!

that's exactly what I was thinking Arawak.

Yes! Welcome back Jig! This is our summer project once I re-splash the Steiger. My son has been plugging away at removing the inner structure and I hope to send it off to get the inside soda blasted to add more layers of 1708. Then redesign the layout as a CC.

I want to integrate the front structural bench INTO the center console, kind of like this...

In all honesty it might be easier, and safer with a side counsel,...

Easier to run the steering and control cables,

Safer with more room to move around,....

I agree with this.

A center console would look cute in that boat, but in reality... a center console in a small boat is always "in the way" and trying to get from the front to the back of the boat (or vice versa) in a hurry can be a prelude to a swim.

Maybe make a mock-up of the console and bench out of cardboard and see how it fits in the boat before you commit the control plumbing below deck.

That's a really good suggestion about mock up and I'm going to do that. I don't want a side console due to balance in a small boat but mock up does make sense.

Tagging along your thread because of the great story about a dad and his son. My only contribution to the project is to tell you I cut the cap off a 1970 Glastron 153 skiboat and converted it into a CC. The only issue I encountered was creating some structure forward where the closed bow was originally. It was great boat for many years for our family when the kids were young/small. The Admiral finally suggested we needed a bigger boat. Good luck with your son's project!

Thank you Willyclay and welcome aboard. Your conversion sounds interesting. Any chance you may have an old photo?

I called the Ohio Division of Watercraft as Flukin' suggested. They were EXTREMELY helpful. They ran the 2005 registration numbers and it is titled as a 1960 15' StarCraft.

The boat is actually 12' 10", so it doesn't require a title in Ohio if it's 14' and under. It's only required to be registered. I'm wondering if someone grabbed a title off of something else at one time. They said I could haul it up to Akron, have it inspected, fill out an affidavit to get it registered so that's great news.

Sorry but no photos. I'm so old that I preceded the "digital age". Wish we had the iboats.com forum way back then. Would have been lots easier. Will try to answer any questions you may have and help any way I can. Enjoy the QFT with your son. Good luck!

EDIT: The Admiral found a picture. Hope it helps.
