115 Evinrude..cant get in reverse..help if u can thanks

i have around a 79 115hp Evinrude motor and my shifter will go into the forward position but will not go past neutral when u try to put it in reverse... what could be my problem

If you're trying to shift with the engine NOT running, spin the propeller when trying to shift.

If the engine IS running, disconnect the shift cable at the engine, then try to shift with the engines shift linkage. If the shift is now okay, the problem is with the control box.

If the shift is still faulty...... has the lower unit been off lately? If so, perhaps the shift rod has been turned out of adjustment, OR..... a lower unit problem exists.

Did the engine ever shift properly for you, and if so, what has happened since that time?

well i bought the boat about a week ago and it wouldnt shift into reverse then..but the guy i bought it from said he was just messin with the shifter puttin it into reverse and forward one day and it just stopped going into reverse. I wasnt sure if he was lying or not.What should i check first if that really happend? i do not have the motor running yet i had to order a starter solenoid for it. Thanks for the help
