Hey all
I’ve recently acquired this vintage 5.5hp and after starting to comb through it, I came to a halt after trying to drop the lower unit for inspection. Is there a pin or some trick to release it?? Seems stuck. Thanx

you will have to remove the power head to access the shift under under it ... not as big a job as it seems 7 screws a few hoses and side side throttle post

see video

change the impeller ... !

if you are careful you may be able to save the main gasket under the PH otherwise you can order it from Vintage outboard .com
313065 gasket, base for Johnson/Evinrude 5.5hp 1959-64 – VintageOutboard.com
dont mix the gaskets .... patterns differ match old and new

great motor btw.... respect oil/fuel ratio recommended

Is there a start up procedure I should adhere to after putting it a together; replacing impeller, head gasket, thermostat, fuel lines, carb kit, plugs…? I’ve not done points or changed the plug wires at this moment

Think I would clean the points, at least, before trying to fire it up. Use a piece of cardboard (matchbook cover or similar), dab some acetone or lacquer thinner on it (brake cleaner maybe) and run it through the points a couple of times.

Crosbyman may have some thoughts.

Thanks-I was thinking maybe to wrestle the flywheel off in the morning and have a look. I have a puller; just don’t know how easy it’ll come off. Don’t think this engine had seen any salt water but still

grade 8 stainless. Can use a harmonic balancer puller. Leave the nut on about half way for protection (you and the shaft). Whack the center post a couple of times with a 2lb sledge, tighten and repeat if necessary.

I normally just use some old head bolts from a 5-1/2 or 6 HP to pull them on small motors.

No, not sheared. No, not supposed to be loose in shaft.
