puff,, if you are asking if the key is supposed to fill the slot in the cam, no. Just the tip of the key "catches" the cam slot.

Yeah I’m aware of that but to me it looked a bit too close to being flush with shaft surface and it will not move ; interchangeable ?

So after getting er all back together and tuggin on that pull chord for about 20 min; she fired up and ran for about a minute and a half showing sufficient potential. This motor was given to me. The guy said he had no idea about it other than the fact that it had decent compression. After taking advice from this forum and checking the points; sure enough they were all a mess as were countless other issues which I also combed through she’s running. The carb bowl gasket has a leak but not a big deal to fix. I do however have two questions and forgive me mods for not starting go a new thread. 1.-do these motors require running off of a pressure tank? And 2.-I ordered a after market fuel pump for this thing, since they’re pretty much absolete; is this a good idea ?

1.-do these motors require running off of a pressure tank? one line hose==> fuel pump

2 line hose==> pressure tank and no pump

And 2.-I ordered a after market fuel pump for this thing, since they’re pretty much obsolete; is this a good idea ?

yes if it uses a pump see#1

The 1960 models were the first year to use a fuel pump.----The one of the 6 HP from 1965 to 1979 will work.----Plus many others motors that use the little square PRESSURE driven pump.

Nicely done! Sounds pretty good to me. Might tweak the idle needle mix a little to dial it in -- think it might smooth out if just a tad leaner (clockwise).

It's hard to tell if they are running on both cylinders, so might check that. (Pull off plug wires one at a time and see if there is a change -- no change typically means that plug isn't contributing.)

Carburetor is making me chase a ghost here; anyone have a proper diagram of one of these ? 1960 evinrude fisherman 5.5h
The carb kit float and needle are not functioning as they should and not closing off thus flooding out -thanks

remove the carb
blow air in right side up

air MUST NOT enter with the carb upside down

... if air enters when upside down the inlet needle /float is not adjusted properly or.. the float is snagging on the gasket inner edges keeping the inlet open to flood the carb

float body must be level/parallel with the carb edge when upside down

carbs work just like toilet bowl fill valves

Haha you’re tha man! I’ve installed plenty of toilets in my time and carbs. Without testing; I think I’ve figured it out-the carb kit came with a jet, needle and float etc. my float was snapped in half so I needed that the most but when trying to change the jet the new didn’t fit right so I used the old and new needle. Turns out that old jet didn’t like the new needle so I stuck the old one in and voila !! Toilets holding !

The newest float valve needles have a black neoprene tip, which is intended to make for a better seal in the valve. But it can stick in the valve. So it comes with a small wire clip that hooks around a machined pimple on the needle, with the other end around the float arm (which lifts out the needle).

The old needles will work with the new valve, but the old valve is fine if it's clean and undamaged.

Thank you-I had it running for about 10 min today trying to dial it in. The fuel pump came by mail and must’ve vibrated apart in the box during shipping. I’m trying to google a parts assembly diagram for this thing; fuel pump 388685. Having no luck at all as what’s on the web is vague at best. Need to know how/where the little springs and sequence go-Jeeze!?!? Cheers!
