hi guys this is my first time posting. This forum has been very helpful to me with repairing my boat. I am so close to getting on the water but am being held up by my alternator. I ordered a new alternator for my 1987 four winns 210 horizon it has a 305 in it. When the alternator came it it was a one wire which I didn't relize when I ordered it. All the post online said to just hook it right up to the battery and I should be good. I bought a new #4 cable and ran it from the alternator to the starting battery and I ran a small ground wire from the screw on the alternator to my engine block( sanded down to bare block). When I try and start it all I hear is the starter and no alternator movement. When I use my original wire from my assist solenoid it works but sparks at the positive battery terminal. I hooked the new alternator cable straight to the Assist solenoid instead on the original #10 wire and it worked for all of 5 seconds and now all I get is the ticking from the starter. I ordered new solenoids and am waiting for them to arrive. My question is do I hook the wire to the battery or the solenoid.

Have no idea what your doing . the #4 should go straight to the battery post at the starter motor solenoid.
what is this "assist solenoid" the slave or the starters main solenoid?

I may be misunderstanding your statement, but...Want do you mean by "no alternator movement"? An alternator can't move on its own. The belt drives the alternator.

There are two starter solenoids one is on the starter and one is a assist solenoid to help with the large amperage draw. What I have read online is the one wire alternator wire goes straight to the bAttery terminal which dosent make sense to me.

When I said no alternator movement I should have said I can here the starter clicking but it's not engaging so the pillows aren't moving.

first and foremost, a one-wire alternator should never be used on a boat. they are way to problematic and will drain the battery if you do not have a battery switch

second, the pilot relay or slave solenoid should never be connected to the alternator directly. see your specific motors schematic in the factory service manual.

third, alternator output goes to same terminal on starter, which goes back to the battery like Bt Doc stated in post #2

4th, if the starter isnt engaging and spinning the motor, either you have a wiring issue such as a bad connection or you have a sticking bendix.
