If he was bouncing/glancing off of outcrops and didn't do any abrupt and severe decelleration I am not too surprised.

I once "fell" from the roof of a 3 story home with no injury at all. Glancing off of dormer roofs kept me from depositing all that kinetic energy in one place and one stop. I landed on my feet with flexed knees. . .almost like a cat. Might have used up a lifetime of luck with that one. I was too young to be as scared as I should have been.

That was about 65 years ago. Last summer I fell with (not off) a step ladder about 6' and severely sprained my knee. Go figure.

Last week I read about a woman who survied a suicide attempt. She jumped from a 23rd floor balcony in Bunos Aires, and landed on a cab. Apparently the way the roof caved in absorbed a lot of the energy of the jump. She was in the hospital in intensive care, to be sure, but she did survive.

Incredible. No matter what you might bounce off of (I'm sure mostly rock ) that is a LONG way down. Lucky does not even come close to describing his survival.

A former co-worker who was once a climbing guide in the Canadian rockies fell about 800ft during one of his climbs. Spent the next 1 1/2 years in hospital and rehab. He has numerous pins, screws and plates holding things together and struggles to walk.
