Hey all,
Quick background - grew up around boats my whole life. Uncle owns a Donzi Classic and has had several boats as I grew up, so I've always been on the water with him and have helped around, but never took on a project myself. Here's a video of the project boat I just picked up!
I'm super new to these forums but there's SO much information on here and figured that someone may be able to help me out. I've recently acquired a 15ft. 1971 Winner Cobra w/ a 70hp Chrysler outboard (will try to get it running this week). The boat was last registered in '06, and from what I can tell, the owner who had it in the water last sold it to the guy I bought it from, who kept it in his driveway for about a year, uncovered and untouched. He bought it as a project but couldn't do anything so I grabbed it for $100. It had some leaves and muck in the bilge area which must have soaked the plywood in the floor/transom/drain hole areas and is why I believe it has to be replaced.
After reading up on transom/floor repair, it seems like my plan of attack would be to remove the upper cap (rivets hold it together, could cut it a little bit forward of the transom and lift off), cut out the interior transom section where it's all stress-cracked, take out the rotted plywood, clean, replace with new plywood/Coosa board, resin it all up and re-fiberglass with mats. For the floor, it seems to be a bit more tricky since it splits on the sides (where battery/gas tank are) to give it that bilge area. Not sure if I'd want to cut that portion of the fiberglass floor or just cut the floor before the transom area and somehow remove rot/fill in with ___?___.
Any help/direction is appreciated!! Basically, what would you all suggest as a plan of attack? Is the boat even worth it? I really like the boat, but haven't done any boat repairs yet. I'm pretty handy and am up for a challenge, but would definitely require some planning and time. Thanks!!
