I was checking the compression on my motor . A 2000 Johnson 250 one with carbs . All between 105-110 so that was good . So I decided to check the spark n noticed no spark on half the engine . I'm think n maybe powerpack any other ideas or tests I can run

Re: 1/2 spark

That motor may have a shift assist switch, which kills spark to 1/2 the motor. The SLOW system also kills spark to 1/2 the motor. Sounds like you should check these out.

To test electrical components on a mtr, you'll need a multi-meter with a DVA adapter and a service manual. After you have the test equipment you can also go to CDI Electronics.com for procedures.

Re: 1/2 spark

Cokeman, Disconnect the shift assist switch (on shift linkage at motor), and see if spark returns. Disconnect both overheat sensors and see if spark returns. If so, you have found the culprit. If not, it could be the wire from the overheat sensor to the powerpack is grounding somewhere, or the blocking diode is bad. That will take some more sophisticated checking. It could also be a bad powerpack.

I may be missing something. but if you haven't noticed any performance drop-off I doubt that you are missing 1/2 your cylinders.
Maybe do the spark test again?

Re: 1/2 spark

A new shift assist switch is about $100. Obviously see if you can get yours working. I need to wiggle the throttle handle to get the switch to open, each time I shift into neutral.

Re: 1/2 spark

punch up the crowleymarine web site and put in the make, year and HP. If you know your model number that is good. Look on crankcase picture (I think) to find it.
