The iboats forum moderators are excited to announce that at this time it appears the iboats forums posting pictures function is working once again. Though we cannot promise for how long, we're hoping for indefinitely.
Mine is not a 3.0.
After reading the comments, I decided to go out on a limb and repair all cracks with JB Weld. I watched dozens of successful stories on YT and figured I would chance it. In preparing the outside of the block for painting, I noticed another crack, so definitely the previous...
After cleaning my SB I noticed a hairline crack that needs repairing. After watching lots of YT videos of folks using JB Weld and others actually welding the cracks, it seems the JB Weld holds up and is far easier. Obviously, through prep work is essential. I am curious what this boating group...
Looking more closely I see that the spring seat on the exhaust is lower in the head than the intake. The exhaust valves measure 4.930 inches long and the intakes are 4.860 inches. Interestingly, the install height of the springs are nearly the same (1.719 inches).
What puzzles me is why the...
I am in the process of rebuilding my 83 SB 350 Chevy and noticed the heights on the existing valve springs are different between the intake and exhaust valves. I am replacing all the lifters and cam with COMP parts and tech support asked me to measure the install height from the bottom of the...
I search the forums and get negative info on these heads! Damn. Do I take the chance and use them, OR, get something better? I sure as hell don't want to put crack-prone heads on my rebuilt engine. What would you boaters do?
And another guy in same forum (Mortec) says...
"No 76cc small block head is worth time or effort or running on a engine, they are quite simply the worst head chevy ever put on a small block , terrible chamber design and spark plug location. Gas guzzlers !"
So I wonder if boaters had the same...
On another forum was stated...
Well, there's good news and a little bad news about these heads!
The Good News; Chevy used these heads from 1976 to 1987 on 350 cid engines.
They were fitted with either 1.94" Intake/1.50" Exhaust, or 2.02" Intake/1.60" Exhaust Valves, all these heads had...
Splines are good. Removing the rust they are good.
The coupler has an o-ring and a very small hole on the cap, I assume for venting.
I really wish I did know the history, but might not have bought the boat! LOL. My friend doing the same says my rust is trivial compared to his. RUST WARS...LOL...
I am now in the process of rebuilding the engine that came out of my 1985 24 foot Beachcraft Cuddy. The first bad news is all the exterior rust on the block and nearly every part. Not easy removing the driveshaft and ball gear since corrosion in the splines made a strong weld with the coupler...
I went looking for replacement for most of my old wire and fuse block and found this website New Wire Marine. Has anyone used this vendor and if so how did it go? Might be others out there so speak up. Thanks
Internet lists this:
To order by the foot, enter the total quantity and we will cut to that complete length (not cut individual feet) 50 foot max.
368 Series, ISO 7840 low permeation fuel hose
Hose built with plastic barrier veneer, polyester reinforcement and NBR (nitrile) outer layer tube...
Now, I'm looking for fuel hose, not cooling hose and my old one says, "Shields 310 USCG Type A Hose Fuel Fill 1983". Don't think any NAPA store has a Type A or A2 one that is USCG approved.
For my setup, its not the solenoids that are the issue. They work fine so far.
Finally got all 3 items working together! Yea!
After cycling the hydraulic trim motor up and down for several cycles, the max extension of the cylinder rods is 2-1/2 on the left and 2-3/8 on the right, with the...
Trying also to hook up all three mechanical devices (3-wire switch, sender unit, and gauge) and test before the engine gets put back in. Looking at the wiring diagram it would seem rather straightforward, but not working so those who are better than me at wiring, please suggest how to wire. I...
I will be replacing all seals first, so thanks for the suggestion.
When I look more closely at the wiring diagram, I am pretty sure the only function of the sender is to report the travel to the dial indication on the dash. After the seals are replaced, I shall test the working order of the...
UPDATE.
Never found a separate manual for the SelecTrim, but the new (old) manual I just got, Part # 983441 covers my model engine, and has more info on this trim setup. Chapter 10 (21 pages) covers a lot but still doesn't tell me, for example, the max distance the piston/rod can travel upon...
Scott: Not necessary.
Others: This is not a "little glass boat" and the concrete I took out was likely put in by the boat builder many, many years ago. How do I know this? Well, if you look closely at the supplied photos, the area I opened up was fully enclosed with the surrounding fiberglass...
No the stringers are not missing. The engine will sit on very hefty beams that you apparently didn't see in the photos. What you and others are seeing are areas that had no structural beams. I have it figured out, but thanks.
Today I used a drill hammer to break up the concrete. I though about this a lot today and keep wondering who and why. Concrete in a boat??
The right side still had some relatively good plywood left underneath the fiberglass overlay. Will replace with new and cover over with poly resin.
