    Power pack and coil AGAIN!!!

Update. Replaced power pack and ignition coil. Engine fired right up. Not sure which one was the culprit. Still leaning how to use voltage meter, nor which wires to check. Are there other ways to pin point or get close to finding which one it could have been. Some process of elimination or...

    Power pack and coil AGAIN!!!

When I say crank I mean it will not fire up or run. Starter turns Engine over fine, just will not fire up, run. Moments before, it would fire up but run ragged. I pulled plugs one at the time and had wife turn key so I could check spark. Top cylinder has spark, bottom cylinder does not.

    Power pack and coil AGAIN!!!

About 7mo ago I replace the power pack and ignition coil on my 1992 40hp Johnson 2stroke to fix I problem with it intermittently dropping a cylinder. It has run beautifully up until the other day. As I approached the dock engine began to run terribly. I put in neutral and use neutral lever to...

    No spark

I recently posted a thread about my 1992 2stroke Johnson 40hp dropping a cylinder intermittently. I replaced the coil and the power pack and that took care of my problems. This was 6 mo ago or so. Yesterday when returning from fishing as I approached the dock engine dropped cylinder again. When...

    Sluggish starting

As far as the carbs go, I did not remove lead shot on top of carbs. I did remove both low speed needle, one on each carb. Mine does not have high speed adjustment needle, just a screw plug in front bowl and high speed orfice in float bowl, non adjustable, if that makes since to you. Thanks

    Sluggish starting

Wow I did not know starter could cause sluggish after starting. I figured being it starts right up when I turn the key the starter was fine. I learn something new everyday. I never really learn how to use ohm meters or that type equipment, sorry. It turns over pretty fast, but this is by ear...

    Sluggish starting

Carb cleaner through offices. Also small wire through small holes. Kept spraying and poking until cleaner flowed freely through orfices. I feel like I did ok with it. Sure ran better afterwards.

    Sluggish starting

When I turn key I push it in and she fires right up. If it begins to die I push in again and she keeps going. No trouble with starter. May take several days for compression test. Stormy here today then off to work for weekend.

    Sluggish starting

I have a 1992 40hp Johnson 2stroke (vj40tlenj). Engine fires right up but seems to be a little sluggish. Runs fine one it gets pass initial startup. Take a little time, say 15 to 20 sec to be able to neutral rev up. After that it’s fine. Here is what I’ve done. Cleaned carbs, (carb kits), Eye...

    Proper spark plug

Trying to decide which Spark Plug will work best for my 1992 40hp Johnson model# ( vj40tlenj ). Chart states ql78yc for all vro/oms equipped motors. The vro has been removed for some time now, ever since I’ve owned it. I mix oil with gas. Would this mean that a different plug should be use or is...

    Bogging issue

Well, after cleaning carbs bogging issues seems to be gone. Went out fishing today and NO MORE bogging! Engine seems to hesitate a little when I give it the initial throttle but then excelarates fine. What can I do to help with the initial hesitation? Also notice that ONE of the 2 spark plug...

    Bogging issue

Thanks. What will happen if drop is at say, between 3/4 to 1in. ( 22mm ). Really don’t want to take carbs back apart again, but I will if this is going to be a problem. What should I expect from engine at this drop? Any damage or running problems?

    Bogging issue

WOW, Thanks for the quick responses. I have at times loosened the cap all the way when it bogs to make sure it’s vented and not restricting fuel, also I rotate tank usage (have 2, 6gallon tanks) after each outing putting fresh gas (non ethanol) and oil in tank used for that day with STABL...

    Bogging issue

I have a 1992 40hp Johnson model # vj40tlenj (if needed), that will bog down from time to time. It will not do it all the time. Most time when I first crank it, it will run fine, with no problems. Sometimes I can take it out several days in a row and have no bogging issues, stopping and fishing...
