Sluggish starting

I have a 1992 40hp Johnson 2stroke (vj40tlenj). Engine fires right up but seems to be a little sluggish. Runs fine one it gets pass initial startup. Take a little time, say 15 to 20 sec to be able to neutral rev up. After that it’s fine. Here is what I’ve done. Cleaned carbs, (carb kits), Eye balled float level and looked pretty good, but waiting for carb gauge to arrive. Link and sync, changed plugs and wires, (ql78yc gapped at .030. Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance

Some will argue.----No " money spent "steps to take.----Are you pushing the key in during cranking for start-up ?----Post your starting procedure.----Post compression test values.----Take starter apart for inspection and ohm test on armature.----Load test the battery.

When I turn key I push it in and she fires right up. If it begins to die I push in again and she keeps going. No trouble with starter. May take several days for compression test. Stormy here today then off to work for weekend.

Carb cleaner through offices. Also small wire through small holes. Kept spraying and poking until cleaner flowed freely through orfices. I feel like I did ok with it. Sure ran better afterwards.

No trouble with starter.
How did you determine that?
Just because it cranks doesn’t mean it good. Starter has min. rpm to spec

I thought my starter was fine until I replaced with new. The cranking rpm of the new starter was noticeably faster. Made a heck of a difference in the way the motor starts

Wow I did not know starter could cause sluggish after starting. I figured being it starts right up when I turn the key the starter was fine. I learn something new everyday. I never really learn how to use ohm meters or that type equipment, sorry. It turns over pretty fast, but this is by ear sound. Remember I am new at this and my tools are few and crude but building. Also knowledge is building. Thanks for the continued help.

As far as the carbs go, I did not remove lead shot on top of carbs. I did remove both low speed needle, one on each carb. Mine does not have high speed adjustment needle, just a screw plug in front bowl and high speed orfice in float bowl, non adjustable, if that makes since to you. Thanks

the small round cover on top of the carb is NOT a lead shot..commonly used to plug cavities/channels.

that round cover gives access to the low speed chamber where fuel drips down and vaporizes when sucked into the carb. If the 3 small hoesare plugged little or no fuel will be fed to the crankcase ...and cylinders.

see description below ..on smaller carbs for jw cd ad fd qd engines

Pick up an open air tester from an auto parts store (cheap), and measure spark. Look for a half inch sharp spark on each (tests ignition output). Do the idle circuit cleaning that Crosbyman suggests -- oval aluminum replacement plug in the carb kit. These are compression fittings. Carefully poke or drill a hole and use a pick or drywall screw to remove. Set by a tap with a hammer or hammer and rod.
