    1996 Johnson 50 Not starting

Good news at last. I have rotated the ring magnet, and now have the timing almost spot on. Engine fires up for a short time when injecting fuel directly. Now to replace my fuel lines and go from there. Word of warning, lining up the notch on the magnet to the factory mark on the flywheel does...

Thanks for your replies. Racerone, I've now got the picture I think you needed. It shows the notch in the inner (ring) magnet in relation to the manufacturer's mark on the flywheel. Am I right to think they should line up.? If so, then my ring magnet has slipped. I can move it a bit by hand.

I'm trying to work out why my timing is around 30deg or more, retarded. I have just read on another forum (MarineEngine.com) that someone found that an aftermarket trigger caused a similar fault on his Mercury. Is that what I know as the timer base? Mine was replaced some years ago, although I...

The engine is not new to me. It has run, but not consistently. Most of the few years I have had it, I have been trying to fix one issue or another. Recently, the problem is the non-start issue. Spark good, compression good, ruled out fuel issue by injecting pre-mixed fuel into the cylinders-...

Checked TDC for both cylinders with a pencil. Top cylinder is as marked on the flywheel. Bottom cylinder TDC is at 180 deg. to top cylinder TDC. Timing light shows sparking on both cylinders is about 30 deg. after TDC. I include a picture of the top of the flywheel, which shows the keyway...

I'm not at that stage yet. I must sort the timing out and then inject a few drops of fuel directly into the chamber, to prove I can get a short term start. The timing stays way off (about 60 deg ATDC), regardless of the length of the spark control rod. The stator can only be fitted in one...

Timing result, on cranking the engine. The timing appears way off, firing at about 60deg ATDC. Linkages done to specification for my engine BJ50 BELEDS. Spark control rod is at 2.5". (For some other engine models, and for 4amp charging systems, this length should be 2 1/16"). I have, in the...

Compression is 150psi on both cylinders. Spark is good at 3/8", on both. New spark plugs, seen them sparking. So I must look at timing. The manual says the boat should be on the water for much of the timing check. But I need to get this to start and run a bit first. What timing adjustments can I...

No success yet. Fresh fuel used. I tried putting a few drops of this into each combustion chamber, still the same; cranking but not firing. What could cause that?

Thanks for your feedback. I have now definitely got a good spark (3/8" on spark gap tester). However, I may have been getting that on my previous HT leads, but I couldn't see clearly outdoors, on a bright day. Nothing changed on starting. Fitted new plugs, gapped to Johnson specs. Nothing...

Hello Racerone. I've dismantled that plug wire, and have ordered a correctly labelled product. I was surprised to find the core is not metal, but looks like bunched fibres.

I was about to call an engineer, when I decided to check a couple of things. My spark gap test suggested a poor spark. Good at 1/16", losing a full spark at 3/16". (I can still see some spark, but not a clear arc across the gap..) Checked the resistance of the spark plug leads; if I'm reading...

I agree with you Saltchuckmatt. I will try to correct any carb/manifold gasket problems, then call a friend, if it still won't start.

Thanks Racerone, Just checked the key is still in place- can't remember the brand, but from a marine parts store, for this model Johnson. Tightened the nut as far as possible, although my torque wrench has broken, so I can't see what the torque is. I'm going to reattach my carbs, replacing one...

Tried putting fuel into spark plug holes 1cc in each, then 5cc in each. Nothing really happened, except a few pops. Will go back and remove/replace Woodruff key (done this a few weeks ago) before I look further

Just realised what crosbyman meant . Engine model is Johnson BJ50 BELEDS. Will go to the boat and try the direct fuel into spark plug hole method, likely to be tomorrow.

Compression is 150 psi on both cylinders. Key removed and replaced. I haven't tried putting fuel in the spark plug hole.

    1996 Johnson 50 Not starting

Hello All. Still no joy starting my Johnson 50. Compression good, spark good, woodruff key in place, carburetors have been cleaned, linkages checked. The engine is not firing, even when spraying 'Easy Start' directly into the carbs. Is it worth me inspecting the reed valves (I've only recently...
