Power Trim Tilt 1996 Johnson 50 hp

I've tried to install a pre-owned PTT(04381350) onto my 1996 Johnson 50hp 2-stroke. Thought I was getting there, working O.K. on the bench, but won't raise the engine when on the boat. I have decided to either buy another unit, or look for a rebuild service in the U.K. Anybody know engineers who tackle this in the U.K.? As for buying a replacement, must it be exactly the same model, or are there others that would fit?

Checked oil level?----Manual release valve fully closed?------Have used ones here.

Thanks Racerone. Topped up oil. Manual release valve fully closed. Bench tested-good movement up and down. Will try on boat again tomorrow, will it raise the engine/ maintain it in the up position. If not, I'll take it apart and see if any bits are missing or damaged.

No joy . I think it's beyond my ability to repair it. Now I'll check out my engine to see if it's worth spending money on it-otherwise change my engine.
