    Manifold leak

Unless of course the Flathead screws are 50 years old and putting a screwdriver on them well is virtually impossible.

    Manifold leak

Yes that was of course the first thing I tried. They were loose. They're old crappy screws. I'm thinking of taking them out and replacing them with bolts that I can put a little more torque on.

    Manifold leak

I have a 1972 Evinrude 40 hp (a bunch of you just helped get my no start issue resolved). Got it running and now there is a bit of a manifold leak here. Is there an easy fix without pulling the entire front off? I can see a little vapor of some kind puffing out there and every little while I...

    Help diagnosing no start

GOT IT. Traced it all back to bad ground! Grounds that I've checked before and thought were solid. New ground wire and all is good. Thanks everybody for your help! Time to open a new post for the small manifold leak I just found 🤦

prevents "Cranking" meaning NO starter spin (like it interupts that voltage) or prevents the spark from firing?

    Help diagnosing no start

I did download the manual. Thanks. So the clips that are disconnected, appear to be part ofg the "stop switch." There is a detailed step by step method for testing ignition circuit that I'll walk through. There is also a detailed diagram of the big plug. There is a fairly detailed wiring...

    Help diagnosing no start

Yes I believe that to be the case. Like I said the previous owner had bypassed some of that because of some problems. I'm just wondering if any of those disconnects what interfere with 12 volts getting to the solenoid. These have been disconnected and under electrical tape since I've had the...

    Help diagnosing no start

Sorry, that's what I meant. When I turn the key to start I should get 12 volts to the s post.

    Help diagnosing no start

Thank you again for the help! If I turn the key on, I should be getting 12v at the S- white wire on the ignition switch, right? Whether or not it makes it's way to the solenoid it's a different story. Did you see the photo of the plugs/wires that are disconnected? I was told they were left...

    Help diagnosing no start

Can anyone confirm that this is the correct diagram for that big plug even though this specifically says 50 horsepower with an alternator in mine is not?

    Help diagnosing no start

Sorry yes I forgot to post the motor info. It is a 72 40hp I have the ignition switch out and trying to test it for continuity but honestly can't find decent directions. My switch has terminals labeled battery s a and two m terminals on opposing sides. Battery is obvious. S I would assume is...

    Help diagnosing no start

When I bench tested it I did get the solenoid to engage and got 12 volts on the starter side so I'm thinking it's not a bad solenoid. If I'm getting different results with it installed I could see possibly bad ground. If I touch my multimeter negative probe to the I terminal on the solenoid and...

    Help diagnosing no start

I have an older Evinrude that I've been working on. A Couple of days ago, turn the key and it would start and run. Now I turn the key and get nothing. No clicking in the solenoid. The solenoid bench tests fine. With it installed I do get 12 volts on the signal post when I turn the key but no...

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

The guy that helped me get over the finish line locally, 40 years experience rebuilding these motors. And when I say lumpy I Don't mean that it is horrible. It is definitely serviceable as it is unless there are some fine tuning screws I don't see somewhere

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

Carb rebuilt and reinstalled and she's been running in a barrel for about 10 minutes pretty smoothly at a little more than idle. I've been told these motors are really lumpy at low idle. I have the main jet at the top of the carburetor turned out two turns.

You sir are owed one large cold adult beverage! Screwdriver and a little tap tap works like a charm. Can't wait to try to get it back on lol

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

Great! Now, how the hell do I get the left side carb stud nut off without removing the starter?!

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

Okay so I kind of started over. Checked both of the brand new condensers and one was bad so I replaced it with one of the originals that still tested good. Check both of the coils again the proper way and one definitely has a break somewhere in the wire as it tests bad intermittently so I...

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

Nada. I grounded that wire and still no ignition. I'm about ready to throw in the towel and let a pro look at it

1972 Evinrude 40 outboard no spark?

I WAS TOTALLY SCREWING THIS UP! I DID NOT REALIZE WHERE THE PLUG WIRE CAME INTO THE COIL! With the coils installed I get around 3 kohm on the front coil and 8.08 pretty steady on the back one going from either lead on the coil to the end of the plug wire And in the process I broke the little...
