1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I just changed mine this spring. You will need to take off the stern drive to change it. You won't have to remove the engine to change it however you will curse the whole time you do it. You will be laying on top of the engine basically. Although it does look like you have more room to the left...

    OMC 4.3

Veryify what Bondo stated and then depending on how long it has been sitting since last start might need to get your starter adjustment tool out and give it a few taps (hit it with a hammer or a rubber mallet half a dozen times).

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

Not sure how to tell if it's cupped. The subtle between props is unknown to me at the moment. First time I've owned a bigger motor besides 25hp 2stroker. I could take a picture of it along with pulling up the old model numbers. The stainless steel one I put on was indeed a omc prop. I never...

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

No offense was taken. The 18" inch pitch should bring it closer to the higher end of the rpms. Why I was wondering about only ever seeing them on odd numbers. I will be looking at either 18 or 19.

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

Tachometer is correct. I've been testing on the same day a few hours a part from each other. Compared the tach on the dash with a digital timing light. My boat as you would expect with a stern drive is a fiberglass deep v hull. It's heavy haven't weight it yet (donzi ragazza 19'). It's got a...

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

By math that is correct as well. Just didn't know about the diameter change and the over all design of a old prop versus something newer? Not even sure if they would be all that different in there designs that would impact the rpms.

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

Currently have a a 4.3l v6 omc fresh rebuild. I've experimented a bit. The prop it came with, old aluminum prop 14.5 x 21 wot at 4300rpms full tank two adults. I got a dirt cheap stainless steel prop same pitch and diameter (14.5 x 21) 3900 rpms same scenario with weight factors (once again this...

    OMC Cobra Shifting Issue

Your going to want to do a bit of reading and get yourself a manual as well. If someone has already been fiddling with it no telling of they set it up properly or not. If it's done incorrectly can do a lot of damage to the lower gears. http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/kw-shift.html Start...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

How would you describe how hard it was to turn the alignment tool. I've often wondered if I did my correctly last year. I read that it should turn with 2 fingers and a thumb. I had the engine out for a rebuild. I didn't adjust the engine mount stands when I took the engine out. Everything...

    Installing new bellows

My bellows are cracked but still watertight. I was in such a rush last summer to get the boat into the water after the engine rebuild at the end of the year (less then 20 hours on the new hour meter) that I didn't change them. Kinda kicking myself that I didn't since I had the drive off to...

    Installing new bellows

Anything else I should know before I change the bellows in the omc cobra? I've read the manual and seems fairly straightforward: Coat the outer surface of the gimble bearing flange, watch for the grooves. Watch the positioning of the clamps mentioned in the manual. Anyone else have any tips...

    Impeller spun?!?!?!?

You will need to split the upper and lower gear cases when it's off the transom mount. To figure out if something is cracked or a seal is gone. It's not terribly difficult to rebuild the lower part but I never touched the upper gearcase. You will need a couple specialized tools. I would first...

    Impeller spun?!?!?!?

Not sure about a 4 banger like yours but if you look at your exhaust bellows theres a chance it comes slitted with holes (factory design) for what I assume is drainage. Have to trim all the way up. You might be able to see pieces of the exhaust flapper or they might have already be gone. Fairly...

    Impeller spun?!?!?!?

I had the same experience with my omc, squeezing the muffs by hand. After discovering that I have always trailed it to a river or lake to test it. Pretty fortunate that it's only 5 minutes away. I don't trust muffs anymore. If you trim down at the boat launch before starting the engine in the...

    Impeller spun?!?!?!?

Water is pulled up from the lower gear case, were the screens are just under the cavitation plate is. My screens were kind of falling a part, there's a chance yours might be gone completely if you are trying to look for a reference. The 1/4 tube is for either drainage or possibly a vent hose.

    Impeller spun?!?!?!?

Not having the outboard/outdrive low enough in the water when starting the engine will do it. Also age of it. What are you running a stinger or cobra? My guess would be a cobra as it's the same impeller/housing as mine. They sit a lot higher in the water versus a mercruiser i/o or a outboard...

    A question on exhaust flaps 1989 Stern Drive 4.3 [ 432APRMED ]

Just dropping the engine back into the boat after a rebuild, can't seem to find anywhere in the manual the position that the exhaust flaps should be in when OUT of the water sitting in the driveway. Mine are currently sitting in the full open position. Just wondering if this is correct or not or...

    14' Starcraft Seafarer 72

Hello I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with a boat I recently inherited from my father. I have been slowly in the process of restoring the boat and have issue with the boat performing bad at high speeds, you are going to have to bare with me I don't know all the technical terms...
