1974 Mercury 50 hp log strike damage repair

I'll do my best to bring her back to life....probably stronger too. At least it's getting a good cleaning and once over...again. At least with an old girl like this, repairs are cheaper than having to bust out another thousand. That's boatin'

1974 Mercury 50 hp log strike damage repair

To even have to start this topic is sicking.... To make a long story short, a submerged log nearly totaled my motor. Traveling along smoothly at 27mph the motor sounded like it exploded, but kept running long enough to reach the shore. So here's what I found so far: 1. Motor popped up and...

Looking for vintage 1974 Mercury 50hp pentagon emblem.

Yesterday I hit a submerged log that popped my motor up and broke off the plastic pentagon shaped emblem on the motor top cover right above the fancy front cover. Anyone have one lying around or know of a source? Just checking. See photo.

1974 50Hp not using all gas in a tank.

Hello all: The past few times I've been out, my motor sputters and dies when there is still about 1 gallon in the tank. The vent is open and I can pump the bulb a few times and get it to keep going a little, but it will quickly die again. If I switch over to the secondary full tank, it runs...

    Maunal trim options...

I have an older Mercury 50hp motor with no power trim. To lift the motor, you have to reach out and pull the motor up into the full up position only. Back breaking for my old bones. I have found lift bars on Amazon for around 60 bucks, but what I'm wondering is if there is a product that would...

Skeg repair options for 1975 Mercury 50hp

I called the local prop repair shop, they want $150 to weld a new skeg on. This motor does not have power tnt, so I need something more robust. Skeg Guard and Panther have products that are perfect but nobody seems to want to help me find a model that is a close match. Here is my outline and...

Cherry condition 1974 Startcraft 16 foor Super Sport - upgrades

AC2 / MicroPro is what they call it now. The AC part is what confuses many. As I understand it, ACQ and AC2 / NON MicroPro was soluble copper - the MicroPro process makes it insoluble and resolves the corrosion issues. MCA is the same as MicroPro or actually MicroPro uses MCA. I think most of...

Skeg repair options for 1975 Mercury 50hp

Yesterday I hit a rock and knocked a chunk of the skeg off. I did not seem to affect handling at all. I did some quick research and see there is a bolt on skeg guard option for repair. Problem is, I can't find a 1974 mercury in any of the application sheets. It's been welded twice in the past...

Cherry condition 1974 Startcraft 16 foor Super Sport - upgrades

a few more pictures, first the water pump innards...there was nothing left of the impeller fins. a shot of the dash, excuse the sawdust mess under the passenger side, I had just cut the opening for the stereo. The black covering on the rails is foam pipe insulation I found in the garage. I'm...

Cherry condition 1974 Startcraft 16 foor Super Sport - upgrades

I just went out and fired it up again. In idle, I only see water coming out the port right above the cavitation plate as pointed out in the photos above and below. However, once I went into forward and gave it some gas and exceed about 1000 to 1200 rpm, the water started coming out of the tell...

Cherry condition 1974 Startcraft 16 foor Super Sport - upgrades

Recently I acquired a 1974 Starcraft Super Sport with a Mercury 500 (50hp) from a relative for a dollar. I know this boat was one owner and I actually learned to water ski behind this very same boat. Because it was always stored indoors, after 42 year this boat is still in very good condition...
