I will check. I bought the 8 hp gasket since I could not lookup the 6hp parts. Maybe the 6 hp has a different bore. I will update soon.

mercury / tohatsu 9.8 low compression after head gasket change

posting this in the merc forum since I don't get a responce in the tohatsu forum. I'm repairing a 2019 6 hp 2 cyl 4 stroke tohatsu outboard. Same powerhead as the 8 and 9.8 or 15 hp tohatsu and mercury I believe. The motor was running and starting really good. Started in 1 pull. Problem is that...

compression 40 psi after changing head gasket tohatsu

I'm repairing a 2019 6 hp 2 cyl 4 stroke tohatsu outboard. Same powerhead as the 8 and 9.8 hp tohatsu and mercury I believe. The motor was running and starting really good. Started in 1 pull. Problem is that the motor got water in the oil. Quite a lot. I figured that it might leak at the head...

    brass propeller Johnson?

Hi All, I stumbled upon a brass propeller. Looker really cool with the brass and the two blades but I cannot figure out on what it fits. I believe it is OMC. ( see the stamp on the stainless insert)It is a 13 spline, 0.9 inc diameter shaft (23mm). The pitch I should lookup and the diameter of...

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

Here we finally had some beter / warmer days so that I could test the engine. I finally got a steady stream out of the thermostat housing. And a really strong stream at the exhaust pipe. From there it flows to the float bowl and than back to the pee hole. The pee hole is not that strong so I...

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

Well, I dont think it is designed to let a % go into the chamber. the chamber is open on the back ( it is the exhaust relief). I think the water should not end in this chamber but only up the intake. The chamber is connected to a passage way on the side of the leg. I can see carbon so exhaust...

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

I managed to remove the exhaust tube from the engine without removing the intake manifold. I didn't see any cracks or something that might be off. Cooling water flows around the exhaust pipe to the intake manifold. In img 5021 it is the centered hole in the plate where the water should come...

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

Yess, I can do that. There is an exhaust tube going down from that manifold. I hope that that comes loose also when I remove the intake manifold. And I hope to see if I can look inside the exhaust leg to see the copper tubing.

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

Yesterday I had some time to tinker with the motor. I did not bring a drill but I had a garden hose that I could attach to the copper tubing with the Lower unit removed. I attached the photo's. As you can see a lot of water shoots out at the exhaust at the back of the midsection. And only a...

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

No, not only the missing tell tale. The powerhead gets to hot to touch and it begins to steam vapor after a while. First I thought it might be the thermostat so I inspected that. Running it with the thermostat cover off no water appears there. Altough quite some water apears at the exhaust...

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

I do have the vent hole but it wasn't clogged. Installed new factory OEM impeller. Today I had some time so I checked the alignment of the cooling tube but it was inside the gommet so I don't think the leg was entirely filled up. I almost instantly get water from the relieve valve. Not from...

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

Oke, some months later and still no luck. I changed out the wear plate underneath and the stainless housing but the problem changed. I have already removed the thermostat in order to check if I have flow. I mounted the wear plate, stainless impeller housing, gaskets ( below the wear plate...

Is is deep enough. Filled it up to the lower cowling. I will buy a new wear plate and housing. And try again.

    cooling 1999 6hp evinrude 4 stroke

I have blasted some air in the intake but could not see anything there. When I put some water in there form above it flows out easily. I will try to remove the screen next. The motor is a fresh water motor. If I rotate the shaft with a drill it pumps out water but just a couple of inches. It is...
